Hello and welcome everyone! Today, we are so honored to speak with Retired General Robert Caslen, Jr. and Dr. Mike Matthews for our first episode of The Honoring Leader. Together they hold over 80 years of leadership experience.    Bringing together their wealth of knowledge, research, and first-hand experience throughout their careers, Bob Caslen and Dr. Matthews co-authored The Character Edge: Leading and Winning with Integrity.     In today's episode, you will gain a deeper understanding of core competencies in leadership discussed in their book The Character Edge, so listen up and let's dive in.    GUEST BIO   Michael D. Matthews, Ph.D., is currently Professor of Engineering Psychology at the United States Military Academy in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. He served as President of the American Psychological Association’s Society for Military Psychology from 2007 to 2008 and is a Templeton Foundation Senior Positive Psychology Fellow. Collectively, his research interests center on Soldier performance in combat and other dangerous contexts.   Dr. Matthews is the author of many significant works, most notably the highly acclaimed Head Strong: How Psychology is Revolutionizing War, which explores the vital role of psychological science in 21st-century war. His most recent book, coauthored with Retired Lieutenant General Bob Caslen, Jr. is The Character Edge: Leading and Winning with Integrity.    Robert (Bob) Caslen, Jr. is a United States veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 43 years. His military career culminated in 2018 as the 59th Superintendent/President of the United States Military Academy at West Point.  Through the establishment of Centers of Excellence at West Point, Bob developed an integration between Army applied problem sets and West Point research and intellectual capital. He stood up the Army Cyber Institute to build skills and Army leaders required for the new cyber fight. Fulfilling a pledge he made soon after becoming Superintendent, he led a sweeping reversal of Army’s football program and developed a culture of excellence through winning with character, culminating in Army defeating Navy in 2016 for the first time in 14 years!    A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Caslen holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Long Island University and a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University. He is a member of the Kansas State Engineering College Hall of Fame, recognized for a Life Time of Service Award from the American Red Cross, was selected as the Honorary Rock of the Year Award for his efforts in diversity as the Superintendent of West Point, the 2018 Gerald R.
