The Pink Elephant
This project was inspired by conversations held on campus about how sex education was not accessible for those who identified as LGBTQ and the negative impact this had on how we were treated in society. In this episode I interviewed Rachel Kuntz, a fellow board member of ASU's student organization "Devil's in the Bedroom," a paraprofessional student organization with the mission to ensure our education and programming empowers individuals to make appropriate decisions about their sexual health and wellbeing; that all experiences are consensual, safe, and pleasurable. Devil's in the Bedroom values equity, inclusivity and justice. While doing this project I was conducting a Sex Ed Mapping project where I surveyed students on the quality of sex education they received, if any and if it addressed issues such as body positivity, consent, access to contraceptives and healthy relationships. Sadly I found that in addition to people receiving abstinence only education, many sought out information on their own from abusive partners, at the bar and adult films. I once heard that learning sex education from porn is like learning how to drive from a high speed police chase, someone is going to get hurt. This was my first time producing my own show so forgive me in advance for being shy, amateur editing and production. I would be open to doing another podcast some day with the right co-host so I thought I would just throw that energy into the universe. You can find me at @thecortez on Instagram and at Cortezfranksanchez.com Thanks again for listening. :)
