The Science Promoter
In this episode, I talked about how the human genome project (HGP) was conducted and the significance of this project. The HGP has made genetic research less costly and less time consuming which allows for discoveries of genes and their roles in diseases. It also inspired the sequencing of other animals and plants to study evolution or allowing genetic modifications to create more disease and climate resistant crops. Nowadays, reference genomes are used for medical purposes such as genetic screening for disease predisposition in the famous case of Angelina Jolie to ancestry testing using services like 23andMe and ancestry.com.
