What was the Christmas journey really like?

In this episode, I read one of my favorite retellings of the Christmas story. It’s called the “Christmas Journey,” and it’s written by Donna VanLiere. Here’s a brief excerpt from the introduction: “Somewhere along the way the cave has been sanitized, the birth made painless, and the people involved stripped of all fear or emotion. It seems we have colored in or forgotten much of what happened to make that journey possible.” VanLiere’s retelling is a beautiful, intimate look at what the real Christmas journey may have been like. In an interview with the Charlotte Observer toward the end of her life she said, “I’m happy with who I am, where I am. I wouldn’t have chosen this life, certainly.
