Three Paths Through the Noise
This week, we walked three paths on SubStack together that cut through the most seductive lie about artificial intelligence: that it makes you creative, capable, or competent. It doesn’t. It reveals and amplifies what’s already there. The Week We Just Walked In this week’s series, disrupted by the holidays, examines how AI amplifies who you are and what you bring to the table. Then, I challenge you to look honestly at your habits and approach to using Artificial Intelligence while laying down some guidelines and an easy to follow framework. Part One: AI Doesn’t Make You Creative—It Exposes Whether You Ever Were [https://iamthoms.substack.com/p/ai-doesnt-make-you-creativeit-exposes] In the first post, we explored how AI doesn’t make you creative. Instead, it exposes whether you ever were. The tool is a mirror before it’s a multiplier. Your prompts reveal the quality of your thinking. Your iterations reveal your standards. Your outputs reveal whether you’re directing vision or outsourcing judgment. Two people. Same AI. Radically different results. The variable isn’t the technology, it’s the person wielding it. Part Two: Character at Scale: Why Your Integrity Matters More in an AI World [https://iamthoms.substack.com/p/character-at-scale-why-your-integrity] In the second installment, we examined why your integrity matters exponentially more when your choices compound at AI speed. Character at scale. Every small compromise you make with AI: accepting credit you didn’t earn; claiming expertise you’re renting; or building on borrowed competence — those choices don’t stay small. They compound. They accelerate. And AI removes all the friction that used to give you time to reconsider. The gap between your AI-assisted output and your actual capability becomes a debt. That debt compounds with interest you can’t afford. Part Three: The RISE Protocol: A Practical Framework for AI-Augmented Growth [https://iamthoms.substack.com/p/the-rise-protocol-a-practical-framework] In the conclusive post, we introduced the RISE Protocol—a practical framework for ensuring what you’re amplifying is actually worth scaling. Four pillars: Clarity, Competence, Character and Commitment. * Clarity (know what you’re building), * Competence (build real capability, not dependency), * Character (own your choices), and * Commitment (build systems, not habits). Intentions without systems are just wishes with better marketing. Willpower fails under pressure. What works is environmental design and systematic constraints that make the right choice the default choice. The Pattern I’m Seeing Here’s what connects all three paths this week: AI is the most honest performance review you’ll ever get. It shows you exactly what you bring to the table when there’s no friction to hide behind. No effort to obscure the quality of your thinking. No time investment to justify mediocre results. Just you and the tool — and the tool amplifies whatever you give it. If you’re bringing depth, curiosity, discernment, and standards, AI amplifies that depth. You explore faster. You create better. You learn more. The tool serves you. If you’re bringing laziness, shortcuts, borrowed competence, and compromised integrity, AI amplifies that too. You atrophy faster. You become dependent. You build a house of cards that will collapse the moment someone asks you to explain your methodology. The tool still serves. But now you’re serving it. Same technology. Opposite trajectories. And here’s what most people miss: You don’t get to choose whether AI amplifies you. That’s already happening. The only choice you have is what gets amplified. Are you amplifying excellence or mediocrity? Integrity or fraud? Capability or dependency? Your character is answering that question right now. At scale. At speed. Exponentially. What This Means for You This Week I want you to do something that will make you uncomfortable: Take away the AI for one day. Just one day this week. Do your work without it. Not to prove you don’t need AI — you probably do need it to stay competitive — and that’s fine. Do it to see the gap. The gap between your AI-assisted output and your actual capability. Because that gap tells you everything you need to know about whether you’re using AI responsibly or not. If the gap is small: You’re using AI to amplify real competence. The tool is making you faster and better at things you can already do. Keep going. You’re on the right path. If the gap is massive: You’re using AI to fake competence you never built. The tool is replacing capability instead of amplifying it. Course correct now, before the debt becomes catastrophic. Be honest with yourself about which category you’re in. Because the stakes are exponential now. The Question Nobody’s Asking Everyone’s asking: “How do I use AI effectively?” That’s the wrong question. The right question is: “Am I building something worth amplifying?” Because if you’re not — if you’re cutting corners, claiming credit you didn’t earn, building on borrowed competence — then AI effectiveness is just accelerating your exposure. You think you’re winning because you’re producing more, faster. What you’re actually doing is compounding a debt that will come due. When it does, when someone asks you to explain your methodology, when you’re given a task without AI access, when the gap between your reputation and your capability gets exposed — the cost will be exponential. Your job. Your reputation. Your relationships. Your self-respect. The bill compounds with every month you continue the deception. So before you chase “AI effectiveness,” ask yourself: “Can I be trusted with this level of leverage?” Not “Am I a good person.” Can you be trusted with tools that amplify everything you are, good and bad, at exponential scale and speed? Your actual behavior over the last 30 days—not your intentions, your actual AI usage—is answering that question right now. Where We’re Going Next Next week, we’re going deeper into the moments where theory meets practice. You understand the framework. You know the principles. You’ve got the RISE Protocol. But here’s what nobody tells you about frameworks: they’re easy to understand and brutally hard to execute. Especially when the pressure is on. When the deadline is crushing and AI could save you three hours. When nobody’s watching and you could claim credit you didn’t earn. When you realize you’ve been faking it and the gap is about to be exposed. These are the pressure points where your RISE gets tested. Most people fail these tests not because they don’t know the right answer (they absolutely know the right answer) but because they’ve never built the systems that make integrity automatic under pressure. So next week, we’re walking three paths through the pressure tests: Monday: The Deadline Decision — when integrity costs you timeWednesday: The Attribution Temptation — when nobody’s checkingFriday: The Competence Crisis — when you realize you’ve been faking it We’re not doing theory anymore. We’re doing case studies. Real scenarios. Actual pressure. The moments where your character gets revealed and your choices get amplified. Because AI doesn’t just amplify who you are in theory. It amplifies who you are under fire. One Last Thing Some of you sent me messages this week about how these articles hit hard. How you recognized yourself in the “Person B” trajectory. How you realized you’ve been building dependency instead of competence. That recognition — that moment of honest self-assessment — that’s not failure. That’s the first step toward rising. The moment you realize you’re faking it is the moment you get to choose who you become next. You can keep faking it and hope the exposure never comes. Or you can do the hard work of building real competence, even if it means admitting the gap and rebuilding from there. One path leads to inevitable catastrophe. The other leads to genuine growth. That choice is entirely yours. But make it soon. Because every day you wait, the debt compounds. Every shortcut you take, the gap widens. Every credit you claim that you didn’t earn, the exposure risk grows. The bill is coming. The only question is: How much will it cost when it arrives? Your Action This Week * Do the one-day test: Work without AI. See the gap. Be honest about what it reveals. * Review your last 30 days: Log your actual AI usage. Identify the patterns. Audit your trajectory. * Ask the hard question: “Based on my actual behavior, can I be trusted with this level of leverage?” Then, starting next week, we’ll walk through the pressure tests together. Not as theory. As practice. Because that’s where this gets real. Three Paths Through the Noise continues next Sunday night.
