Dr. Elena Sassu is a Post Doc at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vetmeduni in Vienna. She worked in several projects aiming to improve pig health and is currently leading the Work Package on Health Management within the European project EU PiG. On this episode, we speak about the recent news concerning the shutdown of several slaughterhouses around the world due to the covid-19 pandemia. This situation impacted severely the workers from these slaughterhouses and meat plants but also, of course, the life and welfare of the animals involved, especially pigs. Dr. Elena Sassu provides us with an overview of the implications and repercussions related to this situation and also brings awareness to the need of implementing clearer guidelines in the livestock sector for extraordinary cases like the present one. Dr. Steven Osofsky is a Professor of wildlife health and health policy at Cornell University and also the Director of the Cornell Wildlife Health Center. His vast experience with wildlife in Southern Africa is the main focus of our conversation. We talk about the complex relationship between wildlife and agriculture in this region and how the project "Beyond Fences", in which the AHEAD group founded by Dr. Osofsky, managed to find a balance between these two sectors. Dr. Steve Osofsky participated also on the "One World, One Health" meeting that happened in 2004, which supported the One Health approach to gain more awareness. In our conversation, we also discover how was to be in this meeting and the context behind it. Dr. Eric Fèvre is a Professor of Veterinary Infectious Diseases at the University of Liverpool, and now is appointed at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. The research group lead by Dr. Eric is composed by 25 researchers that come from different background and nationalities. His research has been focused on emerging diseases with a focus on zoonoses and particularly on neglected zoonoses. On this episode, Dr. Eric Fèvre illustrates the importance of neglected zoonoses, how his research group can measure the impact of their work on farmers and some successful cases of zoonotic diseases eradication in sub-saharan Africa.
