3 Ways To Make Your Writing Clearer 3 Nov 2021 --- If your message isn’t clear, changing a word here or there won’t help. You need these 3 strategies to get to the heart of the problem. 00:00 Writing is hard, especially under deadline 00:20 Sentence-level corrections won't save you if your message isn't clear 00:31 Cut the "since the dawn of time" opening 01:03 Write claim-based topic sentences 01:48 Make sure people are doing thing in your sentences ... 02:18 ... unless you don't want them to be doing things 02:50 Summary Next time you finish a document with a few minutes to spare, don’t squander your time editing with minor sentence-level revisions — changing a word here, cutting a word there (and then putting it back). You should certainly spell-check and proofread every document before you click submit. But if your message isn’t as clear as it needs to be, changing the word “purchase” to “buy” isn’t going to help. Instead, focus on the big picture with these three strategies: 1) Cut the “since the dawn of time” opening and get right to the point. 2) Turn those descriptive topic sentences into topic sentences that make claims. 3) Make sure people are doing things in your sentences — unless you don’t want them to be doing things. If you get in the habit of using these three strategies, you should find you won’t need to do as much last-minute editing in the future. Sanofi’s CEO on How Company Culture Can Thrive in a Distributed, Hybrid World

Sanofi’s CEO on How Company Culture Can Thrive in a Distributed, Hybrid World 11 Nov 2021 --- Paul Hudson, head of one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, says leaders need to sit back and listen more often. HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with the Sanofi CEO to talk about how to drive a strong corporate culture in a dispersed, hybrid era; what the office of the future might look like, and companies' duty to help employees achieve their best selves. Talented employees, he says, “expect to tell you exactly what they think on any given day", and that's great. This interview is the third in a new video series called “The New World of Work,” which will explore how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live — and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. Giving Tuesday Is an International Success. Creator Henry Timms Shares How They Did It

Giving Tuesday Is an International Success. Creator Henry Timms Shares How They Did It 9 Dec 2022 --- Henry Timms is CEO at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and creator of GivingTuesday, the global philanthropic movement that has generated billions of dollars for good causes around the world. Timms credits Giving Tuesday’s success to its use of “new power.” New power is the opposite of top-down “old power”: It’s collaborative, open, and inclusive. Anyone, anywhere can adapt Giving Tuesday to suit their own giving goals, leading to a diversity of approaches like Giving Shoes Day (giving shoes to women going back into the workforce) or University of Michigan’s annual fundraiser, Giving Blue Day. This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success.
