Today, our conversation focuses on the upcoming 2024 national elections in South Africa.Host Trenton Elsley, the Executive Director of Labour Research Service, speaks with Zwelethu Jolobe, an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Cape Town. Professor Jolobe is the author of the book "International Mediation in the South African Transition: Brokering Power in Intractable Conflicts." He has also published numerous journal articles on topics such as national and local elections, coalition politics, party financing, and conflict mediation in Africa.

Yet, despite commendable efforts by government, the private and public sectors as well as civil society, a large percentage of South Africans are living in extreme poverty. Last year, 46 000 more people were without jobs in the fourth quarter of 2023, bringing South Africa’s unemployment rate to 32.1%.
