Over New Diplomatic History Network

This podcast is a product of the Network for New Diplomatic History (NDH). Here you will find interviews, keynotes and discussions on all things concerning diplomacy - old and new. The NDH network is a group of scholars whose work focuses broadly on the historical study of diplomats, their methods, and their cultural, political and social milieux. Diplomatic history as a discipline is now being rediscovered as historians have become more receptive to trends in cultural studies, to advances in the social sciences, and to the mutual incorporation of state and non-state actors into the study of global, international, and transnational history. This in turn is transforming our understanding of ‘diplomacy’ and the identity of ‘the diplomat’.

Four Questions for the Author (Victoria Phillips - Martha Graham's Cold War. The Dance of American Diplomacy, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020)

This is an interview with Victoria Phillips (LSE) [https://www.lse.ac.uk/International-History/People/fellows-and-visiting-staff/phillips/phillips] about her monograph Martha Graham's Cold War. The Dance of American Diplomacy (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020) [https://global.oup.com/academic/product/martha-grahams-cold-war-9780190610364?prevNumResPerPage=20&prevSortField=1&sortField=8&resultsPerPage=20&start=0&lang=en&cc=us] . We ask four questions: - How did you get into the field? - What is the structure and argument of the book? - What is the main historiographical (or other) intervention of the book? - What book on the topic of diplomacy (old or new) has inspired you/ would you like to recommend? The interview accompanies a review of the same title in the latest issue of Diplomatica - a journal of diplomacy and society (Brill) [https://brill.com/view/journals/dipl/dipl-overview.xml?language=en].
