Savinder Singh Uppal was born on 8 April 1924 in Dhamal village of British Punjab (now Pakistan) to S. Fakir Singh. He studied higher up to Hons Punjabi, MA English/Punjabi, and PhD. He was the Secretary at Shri Vallabhbhai Patel Library Narela from 1947 to 50. Then he worked as the Head of Punjabi Department at B.M. College Shimla from 1950 to 55, at Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College Camp, New Delhi in 1955 and also worked as Senior Research Officer Class I, UPSC, New Delhi. This story "Udeek" by Kirpal Kazak is about a family waiting for a parent's death. Kirpal Kazak (born 15 January 1943) is a Punjabi writer. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2019 for his short-story collection Antheen. Kazak was born in village Baloke, Sheikhupura district, British Punjab (now Pakistan). His father, Sadhu Singh Ramgarhia, was well versed in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and Punjabi. The family migrated to Fatehpur Majra village, Patiala district, Punjab, India after the partition of India. He worked as a carpenter and a mason as a youngster. He started his writing career by contributing to Punjabi magazine Nagmani. In 1972, he published his first book Kala Ilm. Milk and Son is a Punjabi story written by Bachint Kaur. After the death of his wife, Baba Baru, a father of five sons, decides that they will now spend three months in their homes, but Baru's mind is to stay with Kartare in his ancestral home. The families of his sons start considering him a burden and are not ready to respect his wishes. He has to spend three months in different houses unwillingly. From above, the nagging of his daughters-in-law also torments him. He compares himself with his brother who has only one son and there is no question of getting a share of his father's property. The mental anguish of Baba Baru at the age of 80 is depicted in this story. Milk and Son have been the center of Punjabi life.
