In Proverbs 14:26 we find the words, “ whoever fears has…” What they have is two things: 1. A secure fortress and 2. A refuge for their children. Who doesn’t want security in this life? And the promise of wisdom is we have a secure fortress. We can’t forget that verse 27 tells us, “the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life…” It is a fountain of life while providing those who have the fear of the Lord security and refuge for generations to come. In this message we look at the secure fortress and realize it isn’t an abstract or external fortress but one that is internal to very believer. It gives us the confidence of thought and spirit to live out the Gospel in everything we do.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom… Guess how we get there? Through the Fountain of Life. We have a disconnect in a modern society about the work involved to draw water from a fresh source. We can readily walk to a faucet, turn a handle and have water immediately. Throughout Scripture the work involved in drawing and carrying water was adulation task that would cause people to thirst just from a normal daily task. Solomon and David tell us that the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life that can keep us from the snares of death. For those who place their faith in Jesus, we understand the thirst for knowledge being fulfilled through the Holy Spirit. We understand the thirst for Justice being fulfilled through Jesus’ sacrifice. We understand that we can only escape the snare of death by revering the one who has the authority over death. That One is Jesus.

The Wisdom of Solomon screams for the worship of God Almighty. As we continue our journey through Proverbs we find that the fear of the Lord is something besides the beginning of knowledge. It is a Fountain of Life. And whoever possess this fear has a secure fortress and a generational refuge. Who wouldn’t want that? But let’s not make a mistake and try to leave God out of our pursuits for wisdom. This won’t amount to anything but more questions and frustrations.

As we continue through Proverbs we see that wisdom is not hidden like we thought. We tend to believe that we don’t have the ability to attain such wisdom and make excuses with all of life because of our poor understanding. The reality is that we are sitting in a place of pride to say that wisdom is unattainable because we have put ourselves not in too low a place but too high to receive. Those who receive this receive it humbly. Those who receive it ask for it. Those who receive act upon it. Those who receive it want to give it away. We find that this wisdom was in the beginning and was a part of the very creation of the universe. Think about this… The wisdom that God used in creating all things is available to all who put their trust in Him. Wow! Who wouldn’t want that wisdom? So, why aren’t you asking for it?
