Straight Up is created with young people who have lived in care. It’s part of the GOM Central Project [https://gomcentral.elmplace.org.au/]. This episode is about debt. Especially debts that you get from your partner. If you’re in debt, and you can’t make your repayments, there’s people that can help. Call the National Debt Helpline [https://ndh.org.au/] on 1800 007 007. Otherwise Anglicare [https://anglicaresa.com.au/support/financial-counselling/], Salvation Army [https://www.salvationarmy.org.au/need-help/financial-assistance/financial-counselling/] and Vinnes [https://www.vinnies.org.au/findhelp/view/233] all offer financial counselling, and can help you sort it out. The Domestic Violence and Aboriginal Family Violence Gateway (1800 800 098 [tel:1800-800-098]) is available for anyone experiencing domestic violence. If you, or anyone else, are in danger call the police on 13 14 44. Women’s Legal Services [https://www.wlssa.org.au/] have some great resources about DV on their website, too. Special thanks to Sam Dewit from the National Debt Helpline, and to Bri for sharing her experiences. Learning Loopholes

Straight Up is created with young people who have lived in care. It’s part of the GOM Central Project [https://gomcentral.elmplace.org.au/]. In this episode, we talk about free education for young care leavers in SA. There’s a bunch of great info in this podcast. So you might need to listen to it a few times or come back to it when it's relevant. Andrew Berkinshaw came in to chat with us about the Australian Institute of Social Relations [https://www.socialrelations.edu.au/] and other places which offer free education to young people who have lived in care, like TAFE SA [https://www.tafesa.edu.au/courses?gclid=Cj0KCQiAvvKBBhCXARIsACTePW-fgeRGHChY9Bq_zq7sD77527QzOOflq8omqlWbEHCw8VDkGvPu3HAaApzDEALw_wcB]. Here’s a list of places where you can go back to school and finish year 11 and 12: ·Thebarton Senior College [http://www.tsc.sa.edu.au/] ·University Senior College [https://usc.adelaide.edu.au/] ·Marden Senior College [http://www.msc.sa.edu.au/] ·North Adelaide Senior College [https://www.northernadelaidesc.sa.edu.au/] ·Muirden Senior College [https://muirden.sa.edu.au/]. As far as university, it’s worth looking at your eligibility for scholarships. Flinders Uni [https://students.flinders.edu.au/finances-and-admin/support/scholarships], Adelaide Uni [https://www.adelaide.edu.au/scholarships/] and Uni SA [https://i.unisa.edu.au/students/scholarships/] all offer scholarships for: ·        Students with disabilities ·        Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students ·        Students from a rural or remote area ·        Students experiencing financial hardship. SATAC also has a scholarship [https://www.satac.edu.au/undergraduate-equity-scholarships] for students who are on Centrelink payments, or can prove that they are low income. We think your best bet is to call the uni of your choice and ask to speak to a person who can advise about scholarships. If you are leaving care soon, or have left recently, Post Care Support Services [https://elmplace.org.au/our-services/post-care-support-services/] are here to help!
