The Fugs were pre-punk, but their music was provocative enough to spark a full-blown moral panic, with crackdowns, censorship, and J. Edgar Hoover's paranoia-driven bureau taking a keen interest. A true vanguard, he even outdid the 27 Club by, tragically, fatally overdosing at just 26 years old. Unbelievably, his story doesn't end there.
