Jesus warns His followers to avoid the heart corrupting religious practices motivated by man’s recognition rather than by God’s, so that they might not be deceived by temporal rewards but chase a reward from their Heavenly Father.

In the second half of this passage, God shows that Christ has gifted the church in two ways, so that, as each member does their part, the whole body grows together in unity, spiritual maturity, and Christlikeness by God’s grace.
