Behind the Joy: Postpartum Depression w/ Jamal Smart

In this episode of The Health Line: Issues that Shape Our Wellbeing, Dr. Andrea Ault-Brutus sits down with filmmaker Jamal Smart to discuss his debut film, Behind the Joy, which sheds light on the often-overlooked issue of postpartum depression. Jamal shares what inspired him to tell this powerful story, his journey to filmmaking, and the impact the film has had on audiences, particularly in raising awareness around maternal mental health among Black women. This episode offers a compelling look at how storytelling can drive important conversations, reduce stigma, and promote greater understanding of critical public health issues. Also, be sure to join us on Monday, April 20th at 6:30pm for a FREE screening of his film, Behind the Joy, at the Hofstra University Student Center Theater.
