And in the dim recesses of the upper gun-deck, the prisoner lies in a serene trance, visited by the chaplain whose ministrations meet a respectful yet inscrutable regard, illuminating the strange intersection of innocence, duty, and the inscrutable attitudes towards death aboard the man-of-war.

Billy Budd Chapter 18

In which the sombre machinery of martial justice grinds inexorably forward upon a grievous deed aboard the Indomitable, compelling a captain of calm resolve to convene a swift tribunal amid a swirl of moral perplexity and rigid duty.
