The Austin ISD school board will be presented this evening with a plan to cut $181-million-dollars from the next year's budget to address a massive deficit as superintendent Matias Segura highlighted several of the planned cuts yesterday, including 558 district roles. he says that all employees with teaching certifications will be given alternate placements, while the district is working to find roles for those who are not certified when possible. An Austin ISD student in the country illegally was able to walk across the stage for graduation with his classmates this week. It was early last month when Luis Fernando Cabrera -- a senior at Northeast early college high school -- was detained by ICE officials following a traffic stop due to an expired registration, following the arrest, Cabrera had been held at the Karnes detention center until a judge ordered his release, and Texas parents are giving the public school system a failing grade as 15 percent of parents say the quality of education in their ISD is excellent, 41-percent call it good, 22 percent describing it as fair and 9 percent as poor. The numbers jump up a bit when talking about the parents of private, charter or home-schooled students. 66-percent rate their education as excellent. The group behind a charter petition that would force regular external audits onto the city of Austin believes it has enough signatures to get that petition on the November ballot. Save Austin Now has officially handed those signatures over to the Austin city clerk as the petition requires the city of Austin to complete an external audit within a year of its passage, and to review its budget every five years, or no less than one year before the city of Austin asks voters for more money in a tax rate election, a new Texas law is adding tougher requirements for the companies behind operating driverless vehicles as senate bill 2807 imposes stricter rules on autonomous vehicle companies operating in the state, including state authorization, emergency response plans for law enforcement, and a public portal where residents can verify operators and file safety complaints, and new numbers from the city of Austin show the homeless population accounts for a significant share of all fatal auto-pedestrian crashes as the data shows 40-percent of the people who are hit by cars and die from their injuries are homeless. The Austin police department has launched an investigation into the death of a man who was found stuffed in a trash can over the weekend as APD says they were called to the area around Packsaddle pass and Ben White on Saturday for a welfare check, and officers arrived on scene and found the man -- identified as 59-year-old duc vo -- who they say was "clearly deceased.” , Two men from Houston are accused of pulling a jewelry store heist in Round Rock after police say Javon Davis and Leslie Lavun Jones were arrested in connection to a robbery at Marc Robinson jewelers at the Round Rock premium outlets back in April as court documents say the two men were part of a group of masked robbers who entered the store and started smashing display cases with hammers before stealing a large amount of high-end jewelry. Georgetown police are again urging residents to lock their vehicles and secure their firearms as they investigate 20 vehicle burglaries that occurred over the weekend across four neighborhoods, including the theft of seven firearms after burglaries took place late at night in the village, Fairhaven, Teravista and Summercrest neighborhoods.
