This was originally published in May of 2023, but it came up in a live the other day so I thought I’d repost it. I want all the conservative apologists out there to read this. We need to have a better society. Incidents like this are too commonplace, and the blatant disrespect that comes from conservative ideology is responsible. Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] I. Am. Livid. For those of you about to tell me that I need to move, I realize your heart is in the right place. But answer me this: Move where? Where can I go where the cancer of disrespect and aggression that has infected the United States will not reach me? Abroad? Do you really think the United States doesn’t have influence on what happens abroad? Do you really think that there is anywhere you can go, anywhere in the world, where some entitled American won’t come up and spit in your child’s face? They don’t like you because of the color of your skin or the person that you love or the language that you speak, and they always feel they have the right to unprovoked aggression because they know there will never be consequences for the aggressors. This is America. No, fleeing is not the answer. Besides many people lack the resources to flee. But I’m not going to sit on my hands, harbor my strength, and allow entitled bigots to spit in the faces of innocent children. It may not be in the news so much anymore, but we’re still in a pandemic [https://www.osfhealthcare.org/blog/is-the-pandemic-over/]. Under normal circumstances, spitting in somebody’s face would be considered an unacceptable physical aggression. In an era of potentially lethal communicable diseases, spitting in somebody’s face should be considered criminal. What happened? Are we at the point now where something as simple as Spanish class is enough to trigger the entitled people in our society? Does a brainwashed boy who has been listening to his heroes chant, “Build the wall!” become enraged at the simple idea that a language besides English should be a topic of study in public school? Radical groups are already banning history in the form of legislation directed at critical race theory (CRT [https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2021/07/02/why-are-states-banning-critical-race-theory/]). Are boys who sit in Spanish class fuming at the suggestion that non-English speakers deserve the same respect and dignity as any other human being? Is that what’s going on? My family is an immigrant family. We speak Spanish in our home. Everybody in my family is fluent in Spanish. Of course, there’s no special consideration for my daughter at the local school district when it comes to her advanced abilities. We have IEPs [https://dpi.wi.gov/families-students/student-success/ccr-iep] for kids who are struggling. That is as it should be since education is a human right. However, why don’t we have IEPs for exceptional children? Why does my daughter, who probably has a better grasp of Spanish than the teacher, have to sit through basic lessons? Why can’t she be considered an assistant? Why can’t her skills be utilized to help the other kids? Why does she essentially have to sit there being bored and have her time wasted? Yesterday my daughter received a perfect score on her test. Her reward was that some boy in the class, whom she had never talked to before, marched over and spit in her face. That’s America for you. This is the result of all the hatred that’s been directed at immigrants for the last decade (and more). I warned you this was going to happen. Sooner or later, somebody’s going to spit in the face of your child too. I know the name of the boy who did it, but I’m guessing I’d face stiffer consequences for revealing it than he’s going to face for spitting in my daughter’s face. It’s my impression that America always offers more protections for aggressors than the innocent people they attack. I’m not the only one who has this impression. How I found out I found out this happened because my daughter told me. Actually, she told my wife and my wife told me. She said she knew it was going to make me upset. Imagine that, my daughter was trying to protect me from this. What’s the social programming responsible for that response? Already she knows that when she’s the target of aggression she’s expected to remain quiet? This is the lesson our society teaches! Do you know what should have happened? I should have been informed by the teacher. I should have received a written report with signatures from the principal, teacher, and school resource officer. They should have informed me that the aggressor had been removed from the classroom, and they should be asking if I want to file criminal charges. Instead, this got swept under the rug. “Boys will be boys.” BS. Now take a step back and consider this. What if it had been a student that spit in the face of a teacher, or the principal, or the school resource officer? I’m guessing that if that had happened, I’d have received a phone call within minutes. I’m guessing I would have been called in for a sit down. But when it’s my daughter getting spit on, there’s nothing. This is the selective perception [https://medium.com/afrosapiophile/selective-perception-helps-perpetuate-systems-of-racism-and-oppression-8827b7a4e1c3] that allows evil to flourish. Unless something happens directly to a person in power, nobody cares. Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] Cars in the parking lot Every day when I drop off my kids at school, I’m confronted with images of blatant aggression. There’s this guy who thinks it’s “cute” to put a decal of a hand grenade on his window. Every single day when I turn on the television, I have to watch a news report about another group of students that was slaughtered at a school. In that context, this guy thinks it’s okay to drive up to a school with a picture of a grenade on the back of his car? Then there’s this vehicle with the racist “Joe and the Hoe” sticker. These are common in my community. Hoe in this context, referring to a woman of color, is appallingly racist. The word refers to the Jezebel stereotype [https://aninjusticemag.com/joe-and-the-hoe-is-racist-evil-and-unacceptable-7817e7785ae6] that plantation owners used to “justify” raping their slaves. However, people will claim ignorance about this historical fact because they’ve managed to keep the harsh realities of the American slave era out of schools. Then there’s this guy who uses weapons of war to spell out a profanity, and also adds the racist phrase just for an additional kick in the teeth. Again, this is the kind of window decal you see in a country where children are routinely slaughtered. The profanity is written using the very images of the weapons of war that are used to murder children. Our society is okay with this? Our society is okay with this kind of image on display a few blocks from a school? You act like you’re surprised that kids get spit on. It seems to me that there are a lot of messages laying around that encourage people to spit on kids. My children have been harassed since 2016 For years, ignorant men wearing red hats have been getting in the face of my wife and kids and screaming, “Build the wall!” However, our society fails to recognize that represents hate speech. In 2021, an armed mob was allowed to attack the Capitol. The consequences have been slow in coming. We’re all told that we should “forget about it” and “move on.” I’ve been the target of physical attacks in the past. In the heat of the moment, somebody punches you in the face and gives you a bloody nose. You’re the one who bleeds. You’re the one who is humiliated. You’re the one who is laughed at. But then, when the time for consequences come, people start saying, “Oh, that’s in the past. Why can’t you let it go? Why do you have to insist on ruining somebody’s life?” The result is that the innocent party is attacked twice. You suffer the initial attack, then you have to suffer the smear campaign when you try to take action to ensure the same abuse doesn’t happen again. But you’ve got to understand that the type of person that would spit in your face isn’t sincere about his remorse. He’s not sorry he spat on you, he’s sorry he might get in trouble for it. The second the heat is turned down, he’s going to go and spit on somebody else. The answer to aggressive people isn’t to sit back and endure their behavior. The answer is to hold them accountable. In fact, if you let them get away with it, their behavior is only going to get worse. Look around. We’re seeing it. It started with “We speak English in America,” then it moved on to “Build the wall!” now they’re spitting in my daughter’s face. A year ago I was with a search party that recovered the body [https://aninjusticemag.com/i-absolutely-blame-trumps-hate-rhetoric-for-the-murder-and-rape-of-a-child-in-my-city-e99120db7d88] of a dead 11 year old girl. We need to take action at stage one because we can’t bring back the dead. My district is considered one of the good ones A few weeks ago I attended an event put on by the local school district. At that event, a woman mentioned [https://medium.com/an-injustice/if-there-is-a-parental-bill-of-rights-there-should-also-be-an-educators-bill-of-rights-1d27035a6c30] that she’d recently moved up from Tennessee after the research she did indicated that our area had a good reputation as a place that was safe for members of the LGBTQ community. That may be the case, but we still had an 11 year old girl get raped and murdered last year. A boy felt entitled to spit on my daughter. I don’t feel any impulse to go patting anyone on the back. A jailer brings you food once a day, that doesn’t make up for the abuses he allows. I only mention this because it brings us back to my statement from the beginning of the article. Some people, whose heart is in the right place, will tell you, “You need to move.” No. That’s the wrong response. There are people who can’t move. There’s no place you can go. We have to stop running away. Instead, we have to stand up to the aggression. We have to make it stop. Stop normalizing disrespectful behavior Take down the flags. Scrape the decals off your car. Quit screaming profanities. Put an end to the racist political slogans. Put the corrupt politicians and the violent aggressors in jail. There aren’t “extremists on both sides.” The extremists are all on the right and we have to overcome the conditioning which makes us think our only solution is to passively endure [https://readcultured.com/its-triggering-to-observe-the-fascist-privilege-whenever-trump-speaks-8115f060f5d8] their incrementally worsening aggression. If you observe evil and do nothing, you’re just as bad. It’s my intention to file criminal charges against the kid who spit on my daughter. It shouldn’t have happened. We’ve got to stop handing power over to abusers in the form of sparing them for any consequences for their actions. Let’s hand over power to the good people who don’t attack the innocent in the first place. aflevering America Is Drunk on Racism artwork

America Is Drunk on Racism

This article is from 2023 and it’s even more obvious now. Your support is greatly appreciated! Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] A few years ago, I got news that a friend of mine, who was known for his partying, had given up drinking. Upon hearing this, it surprised me that of all the emotions I felt, I recall the distinct stab of jealousy. “Why do I feel jealous?” I wondered. If I was living the life I wanted to live, why should I feel envious of a friend who had chosen sobriety? But before I could make further progress, the familiar justifications for drinking rose up to divert me from the path of healthy self-reflection. “I need to be able to wind down in the evenings. I need a break every now and then. Drinking is a part of social settings. It’s just a few beers. I can quit whenever I want.” My internal dialogue became increasingly hostile, as if I was mad at myself for even considering there was anything I needed to change. I found myself asking why the idea of a self-evaluation provoked feelings of denial and anger? What was the mechanism at work that kept me off the path to progress and condemned me to a toxic lifestyle? More importantly, how was it possible to escape this mechanism? I did quit drinking eventually, and my life is better for it. This experience allowed me to recognize how a similar mechanism of self-deception appears whenever there is a social dialogue on the subject of racism. Racism apologists are intoxicated with their perception of our country. They deflect from any mention of racial inequality. Eventually, they become angered that you ever brought it up. The question before us now is how to stage a productive intervention that will help our society develop a true commitment to racial equality. Intoxication on racism My justifications for drinking had become a part of my personal identity. I couldn’t even ask myself whether or not I wanted to keep drinking. There was a mechanism within my thought process that compelled me to sidestep the conversation in favor of maintaining toxic behaviors. I wanted the intoxication, so I adjusted my perception of reality to justify my behavior. My feeling of jealousy was the breakthrough I needed. It helped me realize that there was a form of happiness I desired that drinking prevented me from achieving. This personal experience helped me better understand America’s intoxication with racial inequality. From its inception, the United States has failed to live up to its noble aspirations. Our cultural identity is that this is a nation of freedom, although Black people have always been denied equal freedoms. It’s intoxicating to get lost in the noble aspirations of our mythologized history. It’s sobering to recognize the many ways we’ve betrayed those aspirations. The critical element is to recognize our cultural identity must be based on achieving our stated goals for everyone, not on perpetuating the false mythology that insists our work is already done. Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] Racism and denial of its existence are major components of American cultural identity Conversations about racism in the United States are frequently derailed by the argument that any responsible action to combat injustice will encroach upon our positive sense of national identity. The truth is, adopting a sober perspective on racism is the only way all Americans will ever have access to an unobstructed pursuit of happiness. Discussing racism in America is similar to staging an intervention with a problem drinker. Racism apologists, like problem drinkers, don’t want to listen. Instead, they immediately deflect from the issue or come up with arguments to justify their behavior. * “Our country isn’t racist.” * “Why do you have to bring race into everything?” * “When you discuss racism, you’re dividing the country.” * “Discussing America’s true racial history in schools makes white kids feel uncomfortable.” * “Our Founding Fathers owned slaves, but we can’t judge the past by the morals of today.” * “Slaves learned things that benefited them later in life.” These arguments are designed to preserve a form of nationalistic intoxication, but they all quickly disintegrate under examination. “Fundamentally American” ideas that perpetuate racism The sanitized, positive mythology that we’re trained to believe about the United States only acknowledges the existence of the nation’s most noble ideals. Masses of people are conditioned to believe that America is “the land of opportunity,” that we can “boast of tremendous achievements” in our history, and that our nation is “rooted in fairness and equality.” However, it’s not hard to point to any number of examples of how our country has failed to live up to its promises. Wealth inequality Americans are fixated on the dream of acquiring an obscene amount of individual wealth for themselves. They’re so intoxicated by the promise of this idea that they resort to hostility and denial when confronted with the truth of American wealth inequality. In order to maintain the mythologized perception of America as the “land of opportunity,” it’s necessary to disregard the history of exploited labor. To this day many families [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/mcconnell-s-family-shows-legacy-slavery-persists-most-american-lives-n1028031] that can trace their generational wealth back to the plantation era. Exploitation did not end with the Civil War. There are countless examples of Black people getting run off their land [https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-southern-black-farmers-were-forced-from-their-land-and-their-heritage], or who were denied the benefits [https://www.history.com/news/gi-bill-black-wwii-veterans-benefits] they had rightfully earned. The result of hundreds of years of discrimination is an unfair and deliberately created racial wealth gap [https://www.americanprogress.org/article/eliminating-black-white-wealth-gap-generational-challenge/] between Black and white people which has to be addressed if our nation is ever going to truly represent anything it claims to stand for. Selective interpretation of historyAmericans tend to look at their history through rose-colored glasses. There are people who insist that “all lives matter,” but then they demand a school curriculum that disregards the experience of enslaved Black people. Today, a debate rages on over whether teaching the truth about American history will make white students “feel uncomfortable [https://hechingerreport.org/opinion-why-the-narrative-that-critical-race-theory-makes-white-kids-feel-guilty-is-a-lie/].” It shouldn’t be controversial to say our national identity would be better off rooted in fact instead of fantasy. Censoring the truth about the history of American authoritarianism, the institution of slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, etc., leaves the population vulnerable to exploitation through the use of the same tactics. We can’t allow ourselves to disregard factual history because the truth dismantles the unjust pride we feel in our national identity. A more responsible philosophy is to work to deliver on our country’s promises. That can only be achieved through acknowledging where we failed. Compliance through forceAnother aspect of the fundamental American ideology is the notion we can solve every problem with force. Growing up, if my dad couldn’t make something work, he’d hit it. Often, this resulted in irreparable damage to whatever he was working on. The US military is the most excessively funded [https://www.pgpf.org/blog/2023/04/the-united-states-spends-more-on-defense-than-the-next-10-countries-combined] military in the world. The US police force ranks as the world’s third-largest [https://boingboing.net/2021/04/20/u-s-policing-budgets-would-rank-as-the-worlds-third-highest-military-expenditure.html#:~:text=$118bn%20was%20spent%20funding,official%20armed%20forces%20and%20China%27s.] military. We put too much faith in the concept of force and I wonder if this compulsion is a result of the hostility stage that seems to arise in response to the subject of institutionalized racism. The Black community is disproportionally [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/report-black-people-are-still-killed-police-higher-rate-groups-rcna17169] targeted by the police and subjected to higher rates of incarceration [https://www.sentencingproject.org/reports/the-color-of-justice-racial-and-ethnic-disparity-in-state-prisons-the-sentencing-project/] than the white community. One of the most important censored lessons of history is how modern US police forces grew out of the plantation era’s slave patrols [https://naacp.org/find-resources/history-explained/origins-modern-day-policing]. These facts represent human rights violations that undermine any argument of a commitment to “fairness.” Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] Racism is not a condition for American happiness I gave up drinking not because of an intervention but due to a personal revelation. In this, as in many things, healing required a leap of faith. I discovered that alcohol deceives you into giving up control over many aspects of your life. It determines your activities. It chooses your friends. It influences how you behave in public. It becomes difficult to give up alcohol because alcohol represents everything that’s familiar. I held on to alcohol for too long because I allowed it to become part of my identity. It was difficult to think of quitting because I didn’t know what the future would look like without it. What would I do? What would I say? What about my relationships with my friends? So, I simply maintained the status quo with statements like, “It’s just a harmless drink.” The truth is, this was an excuse to distract from a reality I was too scared to confront. Alcohol is not harmless, it’s toxic. It’s not bringing you happiness, it’s the source of your depression. Many Americans have similarly conditioned themselves to dismiss the toxic influence of racial inequality because they’re intoxicated by an illusion of national identity. “It’s just a harmless comment,” they say. But the truth is that any example of racist behavior or ideology has a devastating ripple effect on our whole society. Just like one drink leads to another, one act of hate leads to another. Racism determines where we spend our national resources, it selects our allies, it corrupts our sense of justice. When we fail to confront it, we’re submitting to fear and ignorance. It’s time we recognized that the pursuit of happiness is only available to anyone if we all work to ensure the path is unobstructed for everyone. The United States of America needs an intervention Addicts are very skilled at self-deception and they take advantage of the rules of polite conversation to make sure no progress is possible. They’ll agree with you and smile to your face even though they have no intention of changing their behavior. With regard to American society, I feel there’s value in using the model of addiction intervention to inform how we approach conversations about racism. Too often in polite conversation, people are allowed to persist in personal illusions while shifting attention away from practical solutions. The tools you learn through having an intervention with an addict can be useful in this sort of interaction. It’s often called a “come-to-Jesus moment.” American society could use one. I had a personal epiphany when a moment of jealousy compelled me to reevaluate certain beliefs I’d conditioned myself never to question. This reevaluation allowed me to give up drinking. With regard to American racial inequity, a large percentage of our population has become convinced that the only way to experience the high of national pride is to disregard all the evidence of racial inequity. This creates an unfair burden on the Black community and America cannot fulfill its promise until this burden is addressed. There’s another way to feel satisfaction with our country. That way lies in working to actually make our most noble aspirations a reality. For too long, we’ve been caught in the shiny flash of a lure that compels us to labor for the promise of a deferred reward. The shiny flash is the deluding lie. We need to focus on making sure everyone, particularly the Black community, receives their promised reward. Consider what you sacrifice through a passive tolerance of institutionalized racism. What price are you forced to pay when you live in a country where injustice has been normalized? To what extent are you robbing your children of their future because you believe it’s important to maintain an idealized sense of personal and national identity? All of our children deserve more than a culture rooted in the false high of denigration, fairy tales, and brute force. They deserve a sober society capable of making responsible decisions. Let’s renew our reverence for truth and take the leap of faith together. Meet Missouri Congressional Candidate Tommy Holstein

It was my pleasure to sit down with Tommy Holstein [https://substack.com/profile/515493603-tommy-holstein] and my good friend A. Eevie Bateman [https://substack.com/profile/443649430-a-eevie-bateman]. I found Tommy to be thoughtful and willing to listen to our concerns about the future of our country. It struck me how he would often pause and consider how to answer before speaking. That’s good because it means he was not deferring to predetermined talking points. The more I do interviews with the new generation of candidates, the more hopeful I become. We have people of integrity who are fed up with the way our government has been mistreating us. They are getting out into the community and making their perspective known. It’s glorious. If you want to learn more about Tommy or support his campaign, you can find his webpage here: Tommy Holstein for Congress [https://www.holsteinformo.org/] Also, subscribe to Eevie here: Thank you LeftieProf [https://substack.com/profile/116079548-leftieprof], PJ Schuster [https://substack.com/profile/106448962-pj-schuster], Stuart Cohen [https://substack.com/profile/351205065-stuart-cohen], Cathy Stein [https://substack.com/profile/318670950-cathy-stein], Jason Gael [https://substack.com/profile/565121-jason-gael], and many others for tuning into my live video with A.
