Exploring Fish Leather: Pioneering Sustainable Fashion Design
Isabelle Taylor is a surrealist fashion designer specialising in "fish leather," - a sustainable material made from the byproducts of smoked salmon - which she uses to create garments through her brand, Skinned Potential. Originally from Cambridge, U.K., Isabelle discovered fish fashion during her foundation year at Central Saint Martins where she first saw a fish-leather garment walk down the runway. Fascinated but confused, she delved deeper into the material while studying for her BA in Design at the University of Edinburgh. There, she sourced salmon skin scraps from a local fishmonger and taught herself the intricate process of tanning, dyeing, and moulding the waste into wearable, eco-friendly leather. After refining her craft at Christopher Kane, The Savile Row Academy, and working within the fish leather industry at Inversa Leather as a branding and design associate, Isabelle is now pursuing an MA at the Royal College of Art in London. Her research focuses on further innovating the fish leather industry, developing a plant-based tanning method, and exploring new techniques for integrating this unique material into fashion through sculpting, embellishment, and other forms of manipulation. In this conversation, Isabelle shares her expertise on fish leather, its under-explored potential, and how her brand, Skinned Potential, is pushing the boundaries of sustainable fashion. She also reflects on the media's reaction to her work with "fish waste" and her vision for the future of her brand and the material's role in the industry. Exploring Biodiversity Through Beautiful Beading: Interview with Jewellery Designer Helena Thulin!
Helena Thulin is a jewelry designer whose work explores biodiversity through the art of beading. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of nature, her creations reflect both the beauty and fragility of our environment, while also confronting her own fears about the future of our planet and its diverse ecosystems and species living within it. After graduating from Studio Berçot in 2014, Helena honed her craft working with Chloé, Sonia Rykiel, and Simone Rocha. Five years ago, she founded her own jewelry brand, and today, her obsession for biodiversity and nature still inspires the design of her delicate handcrafted jewels. Each piece of Helena Thulin jewelry is made by hand, using a combination of precious materials like Swarovski crystals and glass beads, sourced from Portugal. These elements come together in Helena's Paris studio, where she transforms them into one-of-a-kind works of art. In this episode, Helena exposes the importance of local craftsmanship in beading, the realities of maintaining such a practice within a small business, and the valuable lessons she’s learned while building her brand from the ground up. https://www.instagram.com/helenathulin_studio/ https://www.instagram.com/whatsfashiontechnology/?hl=en For advertising opportunities reach out to info@whatsfashiontechnology.com Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/what-is-fashion-technology/donations [https://redcircle.com/what-is-fashion-technology/donations] Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands [https://redcircle.com/brands] Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy [https://redcircle.com/privacy]
