Lan Xang

Chams

We trace their rise through the Kingdom of Champa, a once-powerful maritime civilization shaped by Hindu-Buddhist traditions before later developing Islamic influences. Kingdom of Luang Phrabang

In this episode, we explore the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang, a Lao monarchy that emerged in 1707 after the collapse of the once-powerful Lan Xang empire. We trace how the kingdom navigated centuries of pressure from larger neighbors, often surviving as a vassal state under Siamese and Burmese influence while preserving its royal traditions and regional identity. The episode follows Luang Phrabang’s turn toward France in the late 19th century as a way to escape repeated conflict and invasion, leading to its incorporation into the French Protectorate of Laos. We also look at the city’s lasting importance as the symbolic home of the Lao royal family, even after political power shifted toward Vientiane, and how the kingdom was eventually integrated into the modern Kingdom of Laos in 1947.

Lan Na

In this episode, we focus on the Lan Na kingdom and how its rulers governed a mountainous, sparsely populated realm through flexible systems of manpower and territorial control. The discussion explores the müang hierarchy of core regions, outer zones, and vassal states, along with the nai sip decimal system used to organize labor and military obligations. It also looks at panna districts, which tied administration to irrigation, agriculture, taxation, corvée labor, and census records. Together, these structures reveal both Lan Na’s political sophistication and its vulnerabilities, as limited centralization, manpower shortages, and regional centrifugal forces contributed to the kingdom’s decline in the mid-sixteenth century.

Lawa

In this episode, we trace the history of the Lawa people, one of Mainland Southeast Asia’s deeply rooted Austroasiatic-speaking communities, from their ancient Neolithic origins to their modern struggles for recognition and land rights. Genetic and historical evidence links the Lawa to early agricultural populations who helped shape the region thousands of years ago, while later traditions remember them as urban pioneers, skilled metallurgists, and builders of fortified settlements in northern Thailand. Their relationships with emerging powers such as the Lanna Kingdom reveal a history of alliance, adaptation, and eventual marginalization as new migrations reshaped the political landscape. The episode also explores how Lawa identity has endured through animist spiritual traditions, distinctive rotational farming practices, and continued resistance to state forestry policies that challenge their ancestral connection to the land.
