Our Military Service

In this episode, Allen and Russ talk about their experiences in the military. They share stories about their training, their deployments, and their proudest moments. Allen joined the military in May of 1985 and Russ in November of 1985. Both served in different branches of the military, but they both experienced the challenges and rewards of military service. Allen deployed to Kuwait during Desert Storm and Russ deployed multiple times to Panama, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Both saw combat, and they both witnessed the horrors of war. But they also saw the bravery and sacrifice of their fellow soldiers, and they both came away from their service with a deep sense of pride. Allen and Russ are both grateful for the opportunity to have served their country, and they're proud of the sacrifices they made. Our First Date

In this episode, Allen and Russ talk about their first date. They also share their experiences visiting the Frankfurt and Hanau Christmas Markets in Germany. Allen and Russ met at The Blue Angel Nightclub in 1993 and have been together ever since. They were both stationed in Germany and they took the opportunity to visit the Frankfurt and Hanau Christmas Markets. The Christmas Markets in Germany are a magical experience. They are filled with festive lights, decorations, and food stalls. Allen and Russ had a wonderful time exploring the markets and trying all the different foods. One of their favorite memories from that day was eating spaghetti in Russ's barracks room that he prepared using a plug-in skillet and microwave, but it was one of the best meals they've ever had together, because it was beginning of their relationship and their journey together. The episode also includes a little discussion on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy.” This policy was in effect from 1993 to 2011, and it prohibited gay and lesbian people from serving openly in the military. Allen and Russ talk about the challenges they faced as a gay couple in the military under this policy. Despite the challenges they faced, Allen and Russ are proud of their service and grateful for the opportunities that it's given them. They hope that their story will inspire others to be brave and to live their truth.
