The Gift of Emotion

Welcome to another episode of A Peculiar Parent! I’m so glad you’re here. I’m super passionate about today’s topic which is emotions!! It’s funny because As I was editing I realized that I was talking louder in this episode as I was explaining some concepts and diving in…So if the volume seems a little extra today, it’s the passion! In today’s episode we dive into why emotions are gifts! We talk about getting comfortable with them, expressing and talking about them, labeling, and a lot about validation. You’ll also hear me mention coping and problem solving and we did dive into that but I had to cut that part out because the episode came out to be over an hour… so I’ll have to make a part 2 and talk about those concepts. A lot of what I talk about and honestly a lot of my knowledge of emotional intelligence comes from the amazing work of Alyssa Blask Campbell. She is the creator of seed.and.sew on Instagram and has a podcast called Voices of Your village. She is so knowledgeable on this topic and has actually done research, along with her colleague, Laurel Stauble and together they created the collaborative emotional processing method. Their book Tiny Humans, Big Emotions just released and you know I snagged a copy! I’d 1000% recommend you do too. And definitely check out her podcast and Instagram. The Power of Positivity

HEY!! Welcome to this Episode of A Peculiar Parent! I feel so honored that you chose to take time to listen so thanks for being here! Todays topic is The Power of Positivity and I am really excited about it. In todays episode, We’re going to dive into some behavioral science which I find so interesting. There is so much research around the power of positivity and how much being positive and looking for good impacts peoples lives. The science that I share today is rooted in B.F. Skinners techniques who was a behaviorist. Dr. Sidney Bijou used Skinners techniques to more specifically study child behavior. Their work is what Dr. Glenn Latham bases a lot of his work on positive parenting. I’ve mentioned Dr. Glenn Latham before and I just love his work surrounding the power of positivity. He has written a few books where he talks about behavioral principles and how to apply them in parenting. In his books he specifically speaks of 4 basic principles of human behavior. I am going to briefly touch on some of them todays episode. But if you’re interested in learning more I’d definitely recommend reading his book called Parenting With Love - Making a Difference in a Day. It’s well worth the read. So today we’re going to talk about the relationship between the immediate environment and behavior, then discuss a bit about consequences and what gets good behavior going. There is a lot of interesting stuff in this one so let’s get into it!

Hello! Welcome to the second episode of A Peculiar Parent. I am so grateful that you’re here! The response to my first episode was so amazing so thank you all so much! I am super excited for todays episode called Relationship First! My awesome husband is chatting with me again today and don’t worry, we introduce him this time! (; So In this episode we talk about how we can prioritize fostering intentional relationships with our kids by setting aside distractions, validating their emotions, changing the way that we think about and in turn how we treat them, and a little bit about the effects of compliance achieved by coercive means.

It Starts With You

Welcome to the first episode of A Peculiar Parent. I am freaking out! I am super excited and also terrified all at the same time. First of all, thank you for being here. I love talking to other people about parenting and human development so I am super excited to have the opportunity to do a podcast! There has already been a lot of encouragement and support so thanks you guys! In this first episode we are going to talk about the concept of It Starts With You. I’m really excited to be talking with my husband in this one! We’re planning to do most episodes together because I love talking to teaching him these concepts and hearing what he has to say about them. He is always so supportive of the research I do and open to parenting our 4 amazing kids this way! Super stoked to have him to chat with! So In this episode we talk about healing our inner child and therapy so we can better show up for the kids in our lives. We also talk about the importance of daily self care and how every moment truly starts with us. There really is so much power in doing our own inner work and shifting our perspectives to see that we set the tone and, Remembering that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass (Alma 37:6)
