ADAM: A family saga in the time of the Weimar Republic
In this opening episode, I explain how my book came to be and how my family coped with arriving in England as refugees before the war. Four of my great-aunts, however, waited — and perished with their husbands in the concentration camps. I also address two fundamental questions: Why did so many Jews ignore the obvious dangers and wait until it was too late to leave? And how could the country of Goethe and Beethoven morph into the monster of Nazi Germany?
