Based on ASEAN Gender Outlook, several ASEAN member countries experience 25 percent increase on women's role on managerial level. Despite the increase, women in ASEAN still face several challenges such as the lack of supportive environment as well as limited access to the skill needed in order to be a prospective leader. In this episode, we conversed with Agatha Lydia Natania, the Executive Director of ASEAN Youth Organization, to discuss about the importance of women's role in ASEAN and how the youth can contribute to increase women's role in leadership.

The Asia-Pacific region is home to 52 percent (or approximately 285 million) of the global economically active youth population. However, 30.4 million of the region’s 15-to-24 year-olds are unemployed (GERA, 2019). Moreover, youth who are employed tend to have very low incomes. However, young entrepreneurs face significant barriers in creating start-ups, as they lack mentors as well as business and management skills, while financial constraints, funding and access to markets are also lacking (Lim & Grant, 2014). In the past, the participation of women in the STEM field has been minimal at best. Even until today, in Indonesia, only 1 out 3 STEM workers are women (BPS Indonesia, 2020). The STEM field is often perceived as a field that is designed not for women. The good news is, in recent years, more and more women are joining the field be it as scientists or leaders in the field.
