Vision Zero Reporting

Vision Zero Reporting seeks to shift how crashes are reported and the questions we ask in an effort to change our perception of these events from “accidents” to preventable situations. Leading causes of crashes include distracted driving, speeding, reckless driving, tailgating, driving under the influence of drugs, poor road design, among others. By all means, car crashes are preventable incidents caused by well-known, solvable systemic problems. Media coverage wields significant power to effect change: media decides which stories warrant attention and how to frame the discussion. So why does local media almost always report these tragic stories as isolated incidents, failing to draw attention to the underlying factors and similarities?We’ll be joined by special guest Gregory Lang from Vision Zero Reporting [https://visionzeroreporting.com/] and the BCM’s Active Transportation Director, Paul Drinan. This past November, our Associate Education Director Erik daSilva was invited to take part in Partners of the Americas, a two-way network of volunteer partnerships that foster cultural exchange and education between the U.S. and Latin American countries. The states of Maine and Rio Grande do Norte [https://www.facebook.com/MainePartners] (Brazil) are partners, and bicycle advocacy and education were the focus of Erik’s ten day visit. Mainer and Paralympian Clara Brown!

We’re excited to welcome native Mainer and Paralympian Clara Brown! She is a two time bronze medalist in Paris 2024, and three time world champion between the track and road. She’ll join us to talk about her experience in Paris, and her plans moving forward as she joins an off road cycling team and continues her flight training to pursue her dream of becoming an airline pilot.
