"Sergeant Stubby: The Most Decorated Dog of WWI 28 Mar 2024 --- From 1914 to 1918, tens of millions of young men suffered the horrors of the Great War: the trenches, the maddening din of artillery, the hail of machine guns, and the deadly fog released by gas attacks. Almost 10 million of them never returned home. But even when trudging through the mud, the mist, and the misery, millions of men could count on an army of brave and loyal companions: some 16 million animals who served on both sides of the conflict. Horses, pigeons, and dogs were conscripted to transport supplies, serve as messengers, stand guard, or even provide first aid. Dogs proved rather versatile, as they hauled weapons and supplies, carried messages, killed vermin in the trenches, detected enemy scouts, and stood guard. As many as 10,000 canine friends were trained to find wounded soldiers in no man's land. They became known as “mercy dogs”; clad in a Red Cross vest, they carried a first aid kit, water, and liquor to comfort wounded troops. In today’s Biographics, we are proud to bring you the story of a small mongrel who could, and did, perform all of those duties. More astoundingly, our friend was not conscripted. Sean Connery: Fame, James Bond, and Controversy 5 Oct 2023 --- Sean Connery rose to fame in the 1960s portraying a British secret agent. He became part of that decade’s British Invasion, which saw music, films, television programming, and fashion from the United Kingdom overwhelm cultures in Europe and North America. Yet throughout his long life, Connery recoiled at being called British. He was, loudly and proudly, a son of Scotland. He called himself a Scot and wore a clan’s kilt when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. Connery was not the first choice to play James Bond on film, and the fictional agent’s creator, Ian Fleming, openly disapproved of his casting. Yet Connery’s acting talents were such that he not only won over Fleming, but the writer added portions of Sean’s performance in new stories, including his Scottish background. Connery eventually tired of the role and branched out significantly, yet he remains the standard against which subsequent portrayers of Bond are measured. In his long career, he worked with distinguished directors including John Huston, Sidney Lumet, and Alfred Hitchcock. He starred opposite notable actresses including Tippi Hedren, Lana Turner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Candace Bergen, and Gina Lollabrigida, to name just a few. It was his Bond that introduced the bevy of actresses known to fans and film buffs as “Bond girls”. His film career covered more than 50 years and led to international acclaim.
