episode 30 | Peeling away the Layers of My Identity cover

Description

Have you ever wondered who you really are beneath all the labels, expectations, and roles you’ve carried? In today’s episode, I share an unexpected lesson God showed me while power washing and scraping paint off an old storage shed. As layers of old paint peeled away, revealing the original wood underneath, I couldn’t help but think about identity—and how often our true selves get covered over by stories we’ve believed, words spoken over us, wounds we’ve carried, and expectations we’ve tried to meet. Sometimes healing begins in the cracks. Sometimes the places that feel broken are the very places where God begins revealing what He created from the beginning. In this episode we talk about: * How identity gets covered by layers over time * Why “cracks” can become places of healing * Letting God remove false labels and old beliefs * What Scripture says about who we are in Him * Returning to the original identity God created in us Scriptures Mentioned * Psalm 139:13 * Jeremiah 31:3 * John 15:16 * Romans 8:16–17 * Ephesians 2:10 * Matthew 28:20 Join Me: Being Known If this conversation stirred something in you, I’d love to invite you to join me for Being Known, my 8-week virtual identity workshop. Register at https://www.illuminatethepath.com/workshop [https://www.illuminatethepath.com/workshop] Together we’ll explore: * who God says you are * the false identities you may be carrying * how to replace lies with truth * what it means to live fully known by God You are known. You are loved. And God is gently uncovering the real you.

36 | Living Out Your Faith in Trials

Terry continues to share James' teaching about how to navigate trials by shifting our focus away from worldly status and toward eternal values. In this episode, we explore James 1:9-12 and discover how humility, perseverance, and remaining connected to Christ help us grow through life's difficulties rather than wither under them. We also examine how Jesus and Peter reinforce James' message, reminding us that God's Kingdom values humility over status and faithfulness over worldly success. Scriptures Covered * James 1:9-12 * Matthew 20:16 * Luke 14:7-14 * 1 Peter 5:5-7 * James 2:1-7 * Isaiah 40:6-8 * John 15:6 * Matthew 13:3-9 Key Takeaways * Our identity is found in Christ, not in wealth, poverty, position, or success. * Jesus consistently taught humility by placing others before ourselves. * Pride depends on self; humility depends on God. * Every person deserves dignity and honor because each bears God's image. * Everything in this world is temporary, but God's Word endures forever. * Physical aging is inevitable, but spiritual withering is not. * Remaining connected to Jesus allows us to continue growing through every season. * God blesses those who persevere through trials with steadfast faith and promises thecrown of life. 35| Finding Wisdom in Uncertain Times

Life often presents us with situations where we simply don't know what to do. Whether it's conflict in relationships, difficult decisions, unexpected trials, or seasons of uncertainty, James reminds us that we never have to face them alone. In this episode, Terry focuses on James 1:5–8 and we discover God's incredible promise: if we lack wisdom, we simply need to ask. God doesn't withhold wisdom or shame us for needing it. He gives generously to those who seek Him in faith. We'll explore the difference between human perspective and godly wisdom, practical ways to grow in wisdom through Scripture, prayer, and mature Christian mentors, and what it means to trust God without being tossed back and forth by doubt. If you're facing a difficult decision today, this episode will encourage you to stop striving for all the answers and begin seeking the One who has them. Scriptures Mentioned * James 1:5–8 * Proverbs 1:7 * Matthew 14:22–33 (Peter walks on water) * John 20:24–29 (Thomas' doubt   What's Next?   If this episode encouraged you, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who may be walking through a difficult season. 33 | Counting the Cost of Trials

Trials are an unavoidable part of life. Whether it's grief, illness, disappointment, unexpected loss, or circumstances beyond our control, hardship often arrives when we least expect it. In this episode, Terry explores what Scripture teaches about trials and how we can respond with wisdom instead of fear. Drawing from 1 Peter, James, and Job, Terry discusses how to "count" our trials, evaluate what God may be teaching us, and determine which burdens belong to us, which belong to others, and which need to be surrendered back to God. Key Scriptures * James 1:2-12 * 1 Peter 4:12 * Job 23:10 * Romans 8:28   What's Next?   If this episode encouraged you, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who may be walking through a difficult season.
