A Contaminated Conscience

Hebrews 9:11-28 reveals Jesus Christ as our perfect High Priest who entered the heavenly sanctuary and secured eternal redemption through His own blood. Unlike the repeated sacrifices of the old covenant, Christ's sacrifice was offered once for all, providing complete forgiveness and cleansing of the conscience. Measuring Up: The Old Temple

Hebrews 9:1–10 describes the regulations and furnishings of the earthly tabernacle established under the old covenant. The author explains the arrangement of the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, where priests performed regular ministry and the high priest entered once a year with sacrificial blood for sins. Faith and Power

In Matthew 17:14–20, Jesus healed a boy who was suffering severely after His disciples were unable to cast out a demon. Desperate for help, the boy’s father brought his son to Jesus, who rebuked the demon and immediately restored the child. Later, when the disciples asked why they had failed, Jesus explained that their lack of faith had hindered them. As Ulises Villegas notes, Jesus taught that even faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish what seems impossible when it is rooted in and dependent upon God’s power.

Shadows to Substance

Hebrews 8:1–13 is a powerful declaration that Jesus is the perfect High Priest who mediates a better covenant than the old Mosaic system. The earthly tabernacle and sacrifices were only shadows of the heavenly reality fulfilled in Christ. Dr. David Nystrom shares that through the new covenant, God writes His law on believers’ hearts, offers complete forgiveness of sins, and establishes a direct relationship with His people, making the old covenant obsolete through Jesus’ finished work.

A Better Hope

Hebrews 7:11–28 reveals the superiority of Jesus as our eternal High Priest. Pastor Meeks shares that unlike the temporary priests of the old covenant, Christ’s priesthood is perfect, unchanging, and powerful enough to save completely. Through Him, we don’t rely on rituals or human effort—we stand before God through a better promise and a better priest.
