Scientists have described the recent European heatwave as the most severe ever recorded, with a new study concluding it would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change.   The report warns that extreme heat is becoming more frequent and more dangerous, with Irish cities among those experiencing record levels of heat stress.   But for many people, one question remains: can a small country like Ireland really make a meaningful difference?   To discuss the latest findings and what they mean for us here at home, Alan Morrissey was joined by leading climate expert of NUI Maynooth, Professor John Sweeney. Meanwhile, households are facing the prospect of even higher electricity bills, as the recent European heatwave pushes up wholesale energy prices and puts pressure on electricity supplies.   EirGrid has issued a series of system alerts this week, while several energy providers have announced further price increases.   With many families already struggling with the cost of living, questions are being asked about how Ireland can protect consumers from increasingly volatile energy markets.   Joining Alan Morrissey to discuss the issue was Ireland South Independent MEP Michael McNamara.
