S2E4 - Vocabulary: Lesson 16

Welcome back to the Vocabulary session of Travel English. In Episodes 9 through 12, Kevin continued his journey with more real-world situations—from handling unexpected issues during his trip to reflecting on his experience at the end. In this episode, we’ll go over some key expressions from these final moments—phrases that are useful when dealing with problems, making decisions, and describing your experiences. Let’s get started. 1. Scratch Kevin was surprised to find a scratch on the side of his rental car after returning to the parking lot. Despite being carefully handled, the new computer monitor arrived with a small scratch on the screen. 2. Documentation The rental agent advised Kevin to take photos of the damage for documentation to support his insurance claim. Proper documentation of the software’s internal logic is essential for long-term project maintenance. 3. Inspection The rental company suggested that Kevin stop by one of their locations for a quick inspection of the vehicle. The maintenance team performs a weekly safety inspection on all factory equipment to prevent unexpected breakdowns. 4. Relief It was a huge relief for Kevin to hear that his insurance would cover the cost of the car repairs. The DevOps team felt a sense of relief after they finally restored the server following a prolonged outage. 5. Pull over When the police officer flashed the lights behind him, Kevin immediately looked for a safe spot to pull over. If you encounter heavy rain while driving, it is best to pull over and wait for the visibility to improve. 6. Honestly Honestly, Kevin admitted to Lucas that his trip had been much more eventful and stressful than he had expected. Honestly, providing critical feedback during a performance review is necessary for a team member’s growth. 7. Eventful With rental car issues and a traffic stop, Kevin's first trip to Las Vegas turned out to be quite eventful. It has been an eventful quarter for the company, marked by a successful product launch and a major merger. 8. Farther As Kevin drove farther away from the bright city lights, the landscape became quieter and more open. The marketing team hopes their new advertising campaign will reach even farther into the international market. 9. Vast Standing at the lookout point, Kevin was overwhelmed by the vast landscape that stretched out before him. Engineers must design scalable systems capable of processing vast amounts of data in real-time. 10. Stretch The Grand Canyon is an incredible sight, with a landscape that seems to stretch farther than the eye can see. To meet the tight deadline, the project lead realized the team would have to stretch their resources to the limit. 11. Heading to Before leaving for the airport, Lucas sent Kevin a message to ask if he was heading to his flight home. Most engineers who attend the conference are heading to the main hall for the keynote session. 12. Reflect The long drive back gave Kevin plenty of time to reflect on everything he had experienced during his trip. A leader should take time to reflect on team feedback to improve the internal development workflow. 13. Insightful Kevin described his trip to CES as very insightful, as it gave him a better understanding of edge computing. Thank you for your insightful analysis of current market trends during the strategy meeting. Alright, that’s it for today—and that wraps up our Vocabulary sessions for this season. S2E3 - Vocabulary: Lesson 15

Welcome back to the Vocabulary session of Travel English. In Episodes 5 through 8, Kevin spent more time at the CES, where he was exposed to a wide range of new technologies and technical discussions. In this episode, we’ll focus on some key technical expressions from these situations—terms that are especially useful if you work in tech or need to communicate ideas in a professional setting. Let’s get started. 1. Deposit The hotel staff asked Kevin for his credit card to cover the security deposit during his five-night stay. Most commercial lease agreements require tenants to pay a three-month deposit before taking possession of the office space. 2. Resort fee Kevin was informed that a daily resort fee of forty dollars would be added to his final bill. When calculating the total cost of a Las Vegas trip, travelers should always account for the mandatory resort fee. 3. Elevator Kevin requested a quiet room located far away from the elevator to ensure he could rest properly. The maintenance team is performing a safety inspection on all service elevators to prevent any mechanical failures during peak hours. 4. Headquarters The architect chose a minimalist aesthetic for the company’s new headquarters to reflect its focus on transparency. Major strategic decisions regarding global expansion are usually finalized at the corporate headquarters before being shared with regional offices. 5. Probably The restaurant was crowded probably because many engineers had gathered in Las Vegas for the conference. The debugging process will probably take longer than expected if the original developer did not provide enough documentation. 6. Booth Walking through the massive venue, Kevin noticed countless innovations on display at every booth. The company’s goal was to create an interactive booth that would attract more visitors during the international trade show. 7. Fair The marketing team spent months designing eye-catching materials for the upcoming international trade fair. Leading tech companies often set up information tables at the university career fair to recruit prospective junior engineers. 8. Latency Reducing latency is a critical challenge for robots that need to make instant decisions in real-world environments. High network latency can significantly degrade the user experience during a cross-regional video conference. 9. Real-time Lucas demonstrated a device that runs an AI model to detect objects in real-time without relying on the cloud. The bank implemented a real-time monitoring system to identify and block suspicious transactions as they occur. 10. Edge computing During their dinner conversation, Kevin and Lucas shared deep insights regarding the future of edge computing. Edge computing allows data to be processed closer to the source, which improves efficiency and security for localized systems. 11. Optimization The engineering team built a custom optimization layer to ensure their AI models run faster on mobile devices. The consultant recommended process optimization to eliminate unnecessary steps in the software development lifecycle. 12. Expo Lucas offered to show Kevin his company’s latest AI solutions if he visited the expo the following day. The annual tech expo provides a platform for startups to gain international exposure and connect with potential investors. 13. Semiconductor Taiwan has a strong global reputation in the tech industry, particularly for its excellence in hardware and semiconductors. The global shortage of semiconductors affected many sectors, ranging from automotive manufacturing to consumer electronics. Alright, that’s it for today. The more familiar you are with these terms, the easier it becomes to explain complex ideas in a clear and structured way. episode S2E2 - Vocabulary: Lesson 14 artwork

S2E2 - Vocabulary: Lesson 14

Welcome back to the Vocabulary session of Travel English. In Episodes 3 and 4, Kevin went through important steps after arriving—going through immigration and renting a car for his trip. In this episode, we’ll go over some useful expressions from these situations—phrases you’re likely to use when entering a country or arranging transportation. Let’s get started. 1. Crowded Kevin decided to arrive at the exhibition hall early in the morning to beat the crowds and see the booths clearly. The popular tech conference became so crowded that the organizers had to limit the number of attendees in the main hall. 2. Immigration After a twelve-hour flight, travelers must wait in line at immigration to have their passports stamped and entry approved. The company's HR department assisted the international hire with all the necessary immigration paperwork for his work visa. 3. Agricultural When entering the United States, travelers must declare if they are carrying any agricultural products like fresh fruits or seeds. The government is investing in new technology to help the agricultural sector improve crop yields during the drought. 4. Fingerprinting Fingerprinting has become a standard security procedure at international airports to verify the identity of travelers. Some high-security research facilities use biometric fingerprinting to control access to sensitive laboratory areas. 5. Routine Traveling to a foreign country is a great way to break away from your daily routine and gain a fresh perspective on life. Following a strict testing routine helps the engineering team identify potential bugs before the software is released to users. 6. Vehicle After confirming the reservation details, the agent informed Kevin that his vehicle was parked and ready in section B12. The shift toward electric vehicles is one of the most significant trends currently reshaping the global automotive industry. 7. Sedan The rental agent confirmed that Kevin’s reservation for a silver sedan was ready for pick-up in section B12. While many people prefer SUVs for their space, a sedan is often easier to park in crowded city environments. 8. Collision The full insurance package includes a collision damage waiver, which reduces the driver's financial responsibility if the car is damaged. Engineers use specialized software to simulate vehicle collisions and improve the safety features of autonomous driving systems. 9. Waiver Purchasing a collision damage waiver is a common practice to limit financial responsibility if the rental car is involved in an accident. All participants are required to sign a liability waiver before taking part in the high-risk outdoor team-building activity. 10. Liability It is highly recommended to have liability protection when renting a car to cover damages to other people's property. Before signing the partnership agreement, the legal team carefully reviewed the potential financial liabilities of the project. 11. Fuel Before leaving the rental center, Kevin asked about the fuel policy to make sure he understood how to return the car. Constructive feedback from senior mentors can serve as fuel for a junior engineer's professional growth. 12. Tank The rental agreement states that the vehicle must be returned with a full tank of gas. The manufacturing plant installed a massive water tank to ensure a constant supply for the cooling system. 13. Wise Kevin believed that preparing for potential risks while driving in a foreign country was a very wise approach. It would be wise to consult with the legal department before committing to a long-term contract with a new international partner. Alright, that’s it for today. These expressions are especially useful when you’re entering a country or arranging transportation during your trip. In the next episode, we’ll continue with more vocabulary from Kevin’s journey. Let’s continue learning together. See you next time.
