Description

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2352189/fan_mail/new] Daring Creatively: Unfiltered is an Australian art podcast where Sydney-based contemporary artist Korynn Morrison picks up the phone, drops a surprise topic into the conversation, and hits record. In this episode Korynn calls Gold Coast-based contemporary Australian artist Llewellyn Skye (known simply as Skye) mid-way through her current solo exhibition Blood, Milk and Honey at Curatorial+Co in Sydney. The surprise topic: Alters and Creative Rituals. Skye's studio is a living altar. Three walls dedicated to three energetic zones. Handmade ceramics, vintage dressers, natural-dyed fabric, inherited objects from the women in her matrilineal line, all of it feeding directly into one of the most spiritually charged and emotionally honest bodies of work she has ever made. In this unfiltered conversation two artists talk about the courage it takes to step into a new creative evolution publicly, the altars Skye built in her studio and the releasing ritual she opened her exhibition with, pulling tarot cards mid-process, the women who follow her around the studio, how an overseas residency cracked something open that years of back-to-back shows never could, the psychic moment Korynn had walking into the exhibition for the first time, and what your 96 year old self would tell you right now. This one will give you goosebumps.  New episodes drop whenever the call happens. Filling Your Creative Well: Ana Young on Residencies and Abstract Painting

In this episode Korynn calls Sydney-based abstract artist Ana Young — one of Australia's most compelling painters whose practice explores time, memory and silence. The surprise topic: residencies. This conversation came at the perfect time. Korynn is about to head off on her own artist residency at The Corridor Project [https://www.thecorridorproject.org/] in Central West NSW and needed exactly the kind of grounded, honest wisdom that only Ana could give. What followed was one of the most practical and deeply inspiring conversations about what a residency actually is, what it is not, and how to get the most out of being in a completely new landscape with nothing to prove and nowhere to be. In this honest unplanned conversation two artists talk about Ana's recent residency at Lake Macquarie [https://mac.lakemac.com.au/Get-involved/Artist-opportunities/Lake-House-Artist-Residency] and what she brought back from it, why a residency is about recording and investigating not producing, how to simplify what you are looking at when a landscape overwhelms you, why going in with no research and no expectations is the best thing you can do, the installations Ana made from found materials and how they surprised even her, working with gouache in the field and why it is the most forgiving medium you can take outside, the importance of finding just one thing in a landscape and really staying with it, and why curiosity is the thing that keeps a practice alive long after technical skill has been mastered. If you love art podcasts, have ever considered doing an artist residency, or simply want to hear an honest conversation about what it really means to slow down and fill your creative well, this one is for you. Juggling Art and Career with Australian Artist Joshua van Gestel

In this episode Korynn calls Sydney-based painter, drawer and photographer Joshua van Gestel. Joshua has been making and exhibiting work since 2001, travelling extensively through Australia, Asia and India to seek inspiration, and using his practice to raise awareness for humanitarian organisations across the globe. He also works full time as an educator at Australian Retirement Trust. The surprise topic: juggling the career and art balance. What started as a conversation about how to hold a corporate career and an art practice in the same hands turned into something neither of them expected. By the end of this conversation they realised they had spent the entire time creating a verbal vision board and holding each other accountable to the future versions of themselves. That is just what happens when two artists get on the phone. In this honest unplanned conversation two artists talk about what it actually looks like to juggle a high pressure corporate career alongside a serious art practice, how Joshua built his own studio during COVID and how that one decision changed everything, going from feast or famine creativity to a consistent daily practice, why his paintings now take 100 plus hours when they used to take 10, how the studio became a crucial part of his mental health and wellbeing, taking his blood pressure every day and what the results told him about the studio, landscapes of influence and the deeply personal body of work he is currently making, and why your creative passion does not have to wait for retirement. If you love art podcasts, conversations about the real life of a working artist, or you are someone juggling a career and a creative practice and wondering if it is possible, this one is for you. Beneath the Facade: Diana Miller on Intuition, Creative Life & Breathwork

In this episode Korynn calls Byron Bay-based abstract artist Diana Miller, painter, collagist, wall assemblage maker, and someone whose entire practice is built on the beautiful tension between intuition and control. The surprise topic: the moment intuition won the argument with your mind. Diana's most recent solo exhibition Facade was built around a radical idea, working back over unsold and returned paintings with carefully planned geometric layers, creating a conversation between the intuitive backgrounds underneath and the more controlled shapes on top. Korynn visited this show three times and got something completely different out of it every single time she stood in front of the work. That is the kind of show this was. In this unfiltered conversation two artists talk about the push pull between intuition and control in the creative process, how Diana's graphic design background secretly underpins everything she makes, the importance of honouring the post exhibition lull and why doing nothing after a big show is not laziness but necessary, her brand new journey into breathwork facilitation and how she plans to combine it with her art practice, moving 31 times and what that constant upheaval has done to her work, Human Design, creative guilt, and joy as the thing we all need more of. If you love art podcasts, conversations about the creative process, or the real behind the scenes life of a working Australian artist, this one is for you. BONUS: Excavated Landscapes & Finding My Creative Voice — My Story on Paint Rest Repeat Podcast

This is a bonus episode and it's a little different. This time, I'm the one in the hot seat. I was recently a guest on Ros Gervay's Paint Rest Repeat Podcast [https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/how-to-find-your-unique-art-style-with-korynn-morrison/id1597004305?i=1000766101740], and the conversation got so honest and so real that I wanted to share it with you here on my own feed. Ros asked me about finding your unique art style and developing your creative voice, and I ended up sharing things I haven't really talked about publicly before. In this conversation we cover the story behind my excavated landscape paintings and how that process came to be. How identity, motherhood, postpartum depression and major life change shaped my work. Why finding your style as an artist is not something you can logic your way into, why it happens by making the work, staying open to experimentation and following what keeps calling you back, and how self-doubt, comparison and overthinking get in the way. If you are an artist trying to find your voice, or if you have ever wondered about the story behind my work and how I got here, this one is for you. You can find Ros Gervay and the Paint Rest Repeat Podcast on Apple Podcasts and all major platforms. Talya Brookman on Painting, Process & Backing Yourself

In this episode Korynn calls British abstract painter Talya Brookman, based in Sydney. Raised between London, Los Angeles and Australia, Talya's practice is shaped by a lifelong negotiation between movement and stability, and a deep sensitivity to how place is internalised and carried. In this honest, unplanned conversation two artists talk about battling a painting mid-show and knowing when to stop, the solitude of studio life and how to balance it, going viral on Instagram and what that actually means for an artist, working across large scale abstract canvases in a small studio space, celebrating other artists without competition, the untethered feeling of growing up across multiple countries and how that shaped the work, and why backing yourself is the most important thing you can do. Talya's solo exhibition Inner Grounds is showing at CBD Gallery [https://cbdgallery.com.au/] in Sydney from May 21st to June 13th, go and see it in person if you can. If you love art podcasts, conversations about the creative process, or the real behind the scenes life of a working Australian artist, this one is for you.
