Dark History: Where The Darkness See’s The Light
In February 1945, as the Second World War neared its bloody conclusion, one of Europe's most beautiful cities became the centre of one of the most controversial bombing raids in history. Known as the "Florence on the Elbe," Dresden had long been celebrated for its breathtaking architecture, magnificent churches, and rich cultural heritage. Many believed the city would escape the devastation that had already consumed so much of Germany. They were wrong. Over the course of a single night, waves of Allied bombers unleashed thousands of high-explosive and incendiary bombs upon the city, creating an inferno so intense that it generated its own firestorm. Streets became furnaces, buildings collapsed into rivers of flame, and tens of thousands of civilians found themselves trapped in a nightmare from which there was little hope of escape. But why was Dresden targeted so late in the war? Was the attack a military necessity designed to hasten the defeat of Nazi Germany, or was it an act of destruction that crossed a moral line? More than eighty years later, historians still debate the answers. In this episode of The Dark History Podcast, we explore the history of Dresden, the decisions that led to the raid, the horrifying reality experienced by those on the ground, and the lasting legacy of one of the most devastating aerial bombardments in history. This is the story of The Dresden Firebombing—a night when one city disappeared beneath an ocean of fire.
