Discover Hong Kong: A Journey Through Its History with Coasty Explores
In 1898 Britain leased two territories from the Chinese. One was the New Territories comprising 86 % of modern day Hong Kong. But did you know that Britain also leased a smaller piece of land, complete with an island with a naval base in northern China. This became 'British Weihaiwei'. In today's episode, I look into 'The Scramble For China' and the acquisition of the territory; discover what life was like for the British and Chinese people living there and dig deep into what the territory looked like. Later this year I shall be visiting the City of Weihai in search of the British remnants of the old leased territory.
