Discover the enchanting history of the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens through the Chethams Library Virtual Belle Vue Collection. Established in 1836, these gardens quickly became a beloved destination for the middle classes of industrial Manchester, transforming into one of the north of Englands top attractions. The 1891 guide offers insights into the diverse animals and thrilling amusement park features, while the 1917 guide highlights exciting additions like the new snake and ape houses, Laughterland, and the Figure of 8 Toboggan. It also chronicles the Kings Hall, a venue for major concerts and sporting events until the 1970s. As times changed, so did the gardens, with car parks for visitors horse-drawn carriages and a steadfast tea price. Evening entertainments, including dazzling tableaux and firework displays on the Picture Lake, captivated audiences, reflecting both the peak of British imperialism and the somber realities of World War I. In 1917, the commemorative entertainment honoring the tank battle of the Ancre brought a poignant reminder of the eras uncertainties. (Phil Benson)
