Opened in 1864 under the Kirkbride Plan, it aimed to cure mental illness using a restorative environment. Built for 250 patients, it overcrowded to over 2,400 by the 1950s, leading to neglect and treatments like lobotomies. Closed in 1994, it operates today as a "dark tourism" site offering history and ghost tours.

The Rise of Anor Londo

The Dark Souls series features a cyclical narrative about the "Age of Fire" and its inevitable decay. Lord Gwyn sacrificed himself to prolong this era, cursing humanity with undeath. The games use environmental storytelling—like the Milan Cathedral-inspired Anor Londo—to convey history and despair. Across millennia, kingdoms rise and fall as champions endlessly struggle to link the fading First Flame.

Delhi Purple Sapphire

The "Delhi Purple Sapphire" is an amethyst allegedly cursed after being looted from a Hindu temple during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Owners, like Edward Heron-Allen, reportedly suffered extreme misfortune and health issues. To contain it, Heron-Allen locked the gem inside seven boxes. It now resides in London's Natural History Museum, though experts suspect the curse is actually just a fictional tale invented by Heron-Allen himself.

Seath the Scaleless Betrayal

The lore of Dark Souls focuses on the end of the Age of Ancients, sparked by the betrayal of Seath the Scaleless. Born without immortal scales, Seath allied with Lord Gwyn to destroy his dragon kin. Obsessed with immortality, he claimed the Primordial Crystal, created crystal sorcery, and conducted twisted experiments that drove him insane. Furthermore, the game's brutal mechanics forge an existential experience about finding meaning in suffering.
