episode Supreme Court Edition, Chatrie v. United States: Can police use cellphone location data to catch suspects? cover

Description

Police in Richmond, Virginia, had no leads after an armed bank robbery in 2019, so they got a “geofence” warrant — a novel type of warrant that allowed them to request Google location data from all devices that had been near the bank around the time of the crime. That data helped authorities identify Okello Chatrie, whom they arrested and charged in federal court. But Chatrie argues that the geofence warrant violated his Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. Host Laura Jarrett speaks with the ACLU’s Nathan Freed Wessler, who won the precedent-setting case Carpenter v. United States about whether the police’s use of digital dragnets is consistent with the Fourth Amendment. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Cracks in U.S.- Israel Relations Emerge Over Iran; Trump’s UFC Birthday Bash

President Trump posted on Truth Social that the U.S. “must respond” to Iran shooting down a U.S. military helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday. This comes after Iran and Israel exchanged fire for the first time since a ceasefire was reached in April, raising questions about how aligned the U.S. and Israel are in the push to end the war. NBC News International Correspondent Matt Bradley explains how the war has created political headwinds for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Then, preparations are underway for the UFC event scheduled for this weekend at the White House, which the administration says is a celebration of Trump’s 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States. While the tickets to the UFC fights are free, a Trump-backed super PAC will host a $1M-per-person fundraiser the day before the event. NBC News Senior National Politics Reporter Matt Dixon breaks down why there’s a legal battle brewing over the fight and how it ties into the decadeslong friendship between President Trump and UFC CEO Dana White. Then, 2026 French Open Champion Mirra Andreeva shares why she always thanks herself after winning big matches. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Mixed Messaging in the U.S. Economy; Why Kareem Rahma of 'Subway Takes' Is Hailing a Cab

The May jobs report just dropped with some surprising data: 172,000 jobs were added last month, despite growing energy costs and inflation exacerbated by the war with Iran. Is the economy more resilient than people think, or are economists right to be worried about inflation outpacing wage growth? NBC News Chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans breaks down how these contradicting data points are confusing American consumers. Then, Kareem Rahma and his show “Subway Takes” — where guests share their hottest opinions while riding the subway — have become an internet phenomenon. Rahma talks to "Here's the Scoop" host Yasmin Vossoughian about why he’s trading the train for conversations in cabs for his new show, “Keep the Meter Running.” Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How a SpaceX IPO Could Affect Your 401(k); What’s a ‘YOLO’ Congress?

When SpaceX goes public next week, it could be the biggest initial public offering on record and make CEO Elon Musk into the world’s first trillionaire. NBC News Business and Economy Reporter Allie Canal explains how the AI boom is fueling the summer’s major tech IPOs and what it could mean for your retirement savings. Then, after four House Republicans joined Democrats in a rare — yet symbolic — rebuke of President Donald Trump, NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent Melanie Zanona explains why Trump’s retaliatory tour against sitting Republicans has created a “YOLO Congress.” Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
