Season 2 trailer of Hope and Healing

Welcome to season two of Hope & Healing, a podcast about health issues and health options for tribal citizens and tribal leaders.  Over the next 13 episodes, we’re going to talk about some of the most pressing health equity issues in our community.  We’ll interview health experts from across Indian Country and relatives who are affected most. We’ll dive into topics such as the opioid crisis in Native communities, maternal mortality among Native women, and environmental health in Indigenous communities.   We’ll also shine a light on what Native communities are doing to improve health outcomes for their citizens.  Health care is a complex topic, but we’ll be sure to keep things straightforward, accessible, and jargon free.     Interested in healthcare in Indian Country? Episode Episode 5 - Health Equity Cover

Episode 5 - Health Equity

In the first four episodes of the podcast, we spent time talking about Medicare, Medicaid, and Marketplace Health insurance. In this episode, podcast hosts Levi Rickert and Kristen Bitsuie welcome guest Jim Roberts on the topic of health equity. Jim serves as the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium’s interim Vice President of Intergovernmental Affairs. Health equity is about bridging the gap for people who don’t possess all social determinants such as wealth, power, and prestige. Your health is linked to what experts call “the social determinants of health” and if you don’t possess one or more of those social determinants, it’s harder to access health care, and you likely will end up with worse health outcomes.
