A Pause (and an Update on What's Next)

Hopping on with a quick update as we wrap this season. This first mini-season has been a genuine learning experience — in how to make a podcast, and in what I actually want to explore. Recording these episodes has opened up a lot of new ideas that I'll be taking the next few weeks to shape for the next "season".  When we come back, we're going deeper: how do you disagree and stay in relationship? How do you stay friends with people who see the world differently? What does it look like to build a social life around people who actually know you — not the version you're performing? Carey Fountain has thought a lot about this. In this "Social Studies" interview, we talk to Carey, a Birmingham artist, musician, and creator of Wild Card, who went from a shy kid to someone who genuinely believes we have more in common with each other than we think. How to Feel Better About The Awkwardness of Human Conversation

Does conversation feel harder these days? You're not making it up - and you aren't alone. We're living in a world where the baseline for 'real' conversation is quietly shifting - curated social media, texts we can rewrite, podcasts we can pause, AI that always says the right thing. Compared to all that, real humans can feel unpredictable. Effortful. Kind of awkward. Today I want to normalize what it actually feels like to talk to each other - the mess, the awkwardness, the unpredictability. And why, especially right now, that's not something to fix. Because here's what I've noticed after years of facilitating gatherings - and what a surprising University of Chicago study confirms: the awkwardness isn't getting in the way of connection. One of the most common frustrations we hear at The Gathering Lab - "I know plenty of acquaintances but I want closer friendships...how do I find my people?"  I get it - You've joined the clubs.
