How to create a memorable villain?

Many times, when writing our stories, we do not give it the importance it deserves; but after the protagonist, the antagonist is going to be the most important active force in our story. That's why here we tell you how to create antagonists. The antagonist does not necessarily have to be a person. It could be the time, the circumstances, or it could be the protagonist's own interior. But usually the antagonist takes the form of a person. And making that person a memorable and compelling character is vital to the success of the story. To be able to say that the antagonist fulfills his role, he has to manage to arouse the emotions of the reader as solvently as the protagonist does. The reader probably won't come to identify with an antagonist (as he should with a well-drawn protagonist), but he has to be able to understand his motivations.
