Wells were vital to our existence, important social and cultural hubs which provided fresh supplies of clean water, healing functions and spiritual meccas. Researching well sites at Kirkcudbright, Twynholm and Castle Douglas become a gateway into discovering more about Galloway’s part in the slave trade as well as covenanters and the romantic era. Instigated during the depths of lockdown, the online project tasked members of the community to research and discover ‘lost wells’ in their vicinity.
