Eight years ago, Catherine’s attorney business ran out of money. She was unable to complete payroll the next day, and found herself on her office floor crying, surrounded by all the trappings of her success: a big executive desk with her “How To Be Successful Manual” laying proudly on top, a big, comfy couch and coffee table with gold inlay. And when her bank account ran empty, she thought her hope tank had run empty as well. Catherine decided to end her own life. Luckily, she did what she had learned to do when she felt hopeless - she gave herself one day to rest before, this time, committing suicide. That decision saved her life. Fighting an 8-year prison sentence and a 1,2 million euro fine for hosting Ayahuasca retreats sounds like a real nightmare. But Colin and Ariana turned the experience into the medicine that broke them out of their lifelong mental prison - one that was filled with fears and projections. After two years of legal battles, they not only beat the authorities but made Ayahuasca legal in the province of Cadiz, Spain. They reinvented themselves without the fear of losing their freedom to each other - or the world. “You don’t need to be traumatized to work with plant medicines and Ayahuasca,” says Ariana. Her curiosity led her into a deep dive to what would eventually become her path of working with breathwork and sacred plants. The possible 1,2 million euro fine and 8-year prison sentence became a manifestation of one of Colin’s long lived fears - of ending up in jail. He could go to prison, or he could fight over what he believed was right. Together with the Ayahuasca Defense Fund, they ended up winning their case, making the province of Cadiz the only legal space to host and drink Ayahuasca retreats in Spain. This battle intensified outside the courtroom as well, as personal fears surfaced - both individual fears and those formed within the couple. Colin and Ariana decided to meet these fears and insecurities on the inside, and turned a situation most would see as “impossible” into a new possibility for deeper understanding, gratitude and healing. “I remember reflecting on how it was before the court case,” Colin recalls. “I was in prison. I was just always in prison, always scared.
