Serving On All Fronts: From Leading The Jail To Leading In The Community. My guest this week is Hernando Alderman Ward 4 and Head of the Tate County Jail Mr. Chad Wicker. “Press forward. Do not stop, do not linger in your journey, but strive for the mark set before you.” ~ G. Whitefield My guest this week shares how he started to find his path in serving the community when he started his job at the DeSoto County jail in Hernando, MS. He wasn’t just going through the motions as a jailer when he was at work. Mr. Wicker explains how he recognized there was a much bigger picture to look at and he wanted to make a difference. Mr. Wicker said he knew that many times it was the same offenders over and over again. Instead of just writing them up to being a lost cause he wanted to gain better understanding as to why they kept coming back and how that could be altered. Mr. Wicker explains that the first thing you have to do is get to know each person and find out what behaviors they continue to follow that lead them back to jail. For many it is usually drugs and alcohol that influence poor decision making. This meant that there needed to be more effort put forth in rehab and recovery. Along with that Mr. Wicker knew that allowing for the opportunity to gain their education can lead to better outcomes when they leave jail. So programs designed to help individuals gain their GED and learn a vocation is now available to those that are interested. Mr. Wicker’s ability to see society from the spectrum of community with his position as an alderman and his ability to influence how differences can be made in the jails to create better circumstances, is a full circle perspective. Mr. Wicker is now the head jailer at the Tate County jail and continues to serve as an Alderman in Hernando, MS. In addition to his public service Mr. Wicker also produces a podcast called “The Round About Round Up”.
