Permission, Not Ability
Today Ashley tackles the most controversial verse in the Bible for modern times. Along the way we will learn more about Roman culture, and then look at three women in the Bible that usually come up when discussing women in leadership and God's design: Phoebe, Priscilla, Deborah. Slides, notes, and bulletin insert are attached. Gender Cohort
Ashley presented a condensed recap of teaching on the topic of Biblical gender roles, but he reduced this triggering cultural conversation to the true root of the matter. He explores: How did we get here? What does scripture say? What do I do about it? Buckle your seat belt for a fierce ride through the last two hundred years of cultural slide in the church. See the attachments for the slides, notes, and bibliography of recommended resources.
Godliness Inside and Out
Today we continue a multi-week series on one of the most hotly contested passages in the Bible: 1 Timothy 2:8-15. We will tackle the following questions: What are the unique temptations for men and women that Paul addressed? What cultural influences was Paul trying to account for in setting expectations within the household of God? How would you answer these objections to a plain reading of scripture? It was only for that time and place. It was only Pauls opinion. Paul was not a legitimate Apostle. There Are Two Genders, Not One
Today we begin a multi-week series on one of the most hotly contested passages in the Bible: 1 Timothy 2:8-15. We will tackle the following questions: Why did God create two genders if we are one in Christ? Why is this truth necessary now? Why do some view this as a difficult passage? How do we approach difficult passages? What was Pauls intent? How are men and women the same? And different? Two views: Complementarian https://cbmw.org Egalitarian - https://www.cbeinternational.org Summary Statement: Men and women have equal value before God, and God has given them unique natures, roles, and responsibilities within the home and church. Leadership roles are reserved for men, as demonstrated in both OT NT patterns and teaching. All believing women and men are charged with a wide range of good works outlined in scripture and suited to Gods design for gender strengths. This structure is prescribed for the household of God. While these gender role differences are anecdotally observed in secular contexts, scriptural gender roles are not enforced there. Scripture opposes any view that undermines the dignity of either men or women.
