Nobody has ever mistaken a tent for a cathedral. So it's worth noticing that when God gave his people their first instructions for a place of worship, he didn't ask for stone, spires, or permanence. He asked for a tent: something with pegs and poles, built to be packed up and carried. In this message, we look at why the God who owned the mountain wanted a tent instead, and what that reveals about where he actually intends to live.

In every temple in the ancient world, the innermost room held a statue of the god. Egypt, Babylon, Canaan; walk far enough in, and you reach the god's shape. But at the center of Israel's worship, between the wings of the cherubim, there was nothing. No image. No figure. Open air. This reflection is about the Mercy Seat, the empty space God called a throne, and why the emptiest spot in Israel was the fullest place on earth.

The creation of the entire universe gets two chapters. This tent gets thirteen. Either the Bible has terrible editorial judgment, or something is happening in the tabernacle that most of us have been skimming past. In this reflection, we slow down in the most skipped section of Exodus and find blueprints for something bigger than a building: a God who doesn't want to be visited, he wants to move in.

In this reflection, we step back from Exodus to ask a question many of us carry quietly: how do grace and obedience fit together? If God's love is a free gift, why does following him seem to come with commands? What we find is that these were never two separate things. God doesn't rescue us first and then hand us a list of requirements as step two. The rescue and the journey are one movement, because God himself is where life is found. Moving toward him is moving toward life. Turning away from him is turning away from life. Obedience was never about earning our place with God. It's about the way he made the world, and the way home.

Anyone who's spent time in church knows the whiplash. One week the message is all grace, come as you are, it was never about you. The next week it's the narrow gate, and you'd better straighten up. So which is it? Nowhere does that question press harder than the Ten Commandments, and it turns out Jesus preached a whole sermon on them. In this message from our Exodus series, we climb the mountain with Jesus in Matthew 5 and face the fork honestly: was he raising the standard to prove no one could meet it, so we'd give up and grab grace? Or did he actually mean it? What we find is better news than either extreme: a gift that was already yours the morning it arrived, and a life it was always meant to open. Along the way: what the commands were aiming at all along, what salvation actually is, why your worst day doesn't un-deliver you, and the letter too many of us have framed on the wall but never answered.
