After being kidnapped and subsequently abandoned by her mother, who struggled with severe mental illness and substance addiction, Sunny and her older brother were forced to navigate a world that offered them little protection. At just three years old, they were placed in the care of a relative who treated them with cold indifference, forcing them to survive on the fringes of a home where they were permitted only to sleep. Between the ages of six and eight, Sunny endured further harrowing experiences as a survivor of physical abuse and commercial sexual exploitation, all while facing extreme malnutrition in Brooklyn.
