Description

Fifty States, Fifty Stories: Indigenous America at 250 As the United States approaches 250 years of independence, we invite you to join us on a journey across America—one state at a time. In this new series from Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes, we will explore the documented history of Indigenous peoples throughout all fifty states, examining how expansion, public policy, conflict, displacement, resilience, and survival shaped the nation we know today. Some of these stories will be inspiring. Others will be heartbreaking. And some may challenge long-held assumptions about the American experience. This series is not intended to condemn, divide, or assign guilt to people living today. Nor is it an attempt to rewrite history to fit a particular political viewpoint. Our commitment is to approach these conversations with honesty, respect, and an unwavering dedication to what historians, scholars, official records, and documented evidence reveal. For the Puerto Rican community, this journey carries an additional purpose. For generations, many of us have engaged in passionate discussions about different chapters of Puerto Rico's history. Yet meaningful conversations require context. By broadening our understanding of the larger American experience—its achievements, its contradictions, and its treatment of diverse communities throughout history—we may find ourselves asking deeper questions and seeking a more complete understanding of Puerto Rico's own place within that story. Our goal is not to tell you what to believe. Our goal is to encourage you to think critically, ask questions, explore the evidence, and engage in thoughtful dialogue—even when the truths we encounter are uncomfortable. Because history should not be feared. History should not be ignored. History should be explored with courage, humility, and a commitment to understanding. Join us as we travel through all fifty states, uncovering stories that deserve to be remembered and voices that deserve to be heard. Fifty States. Fifty Stories. One opportunity to reflect on what 250 years of American history truly represent.

episode Why has the discussion about Puerto Rico’s reunification or autonomy with Spain suddenly gained so much attention? artwork

Why has the discussion about Puerto Rico’s reunification or autonomy with Spain suddenly gained so much attention?

Why has the discussion about Puerto Rico's reunification or autonomy with Spain suddenly gained so much attention? The answer lies in Puerto Rico's current political status as an unincorporated territory of the United States. In this episode, we examine the constitutional realities, the growing public debate following our presentation before the United Nations, and why we believe all viable options should be available to the Puerto Rican people in a binding referendum authorized by Congress. This conversation is not about imposing a political solution. It is about defending the democratic right of Puerto Ricans to study, debate, and vote on every available option for the future of our island. Democracy should never fear competition. episode Did Spain Create the American Cowboy? artwork

Did Spain Create the American Cowboy?

When we think of the American cowboy, images of Texas ranches, the Wild West, cattle drives, and Hollywood movies often come to mind. Yet few people realize that the roots of this iconic figure can be traced back to Spain. It was the Spanish who reintroduced the horse to the Americas, brought cattle ranching traditions, and established the first horseback livestock operations across vast territories of the New World. From these traditions emerged the vaquero, whose name comes from the Spanish word vaca (cow), and who became the direct predecessor of the American cowboy. Over time, Mexico further developed and refined this vaquero culture, adding techniques, clothing, and customs that were later adopted by Anglo-American settlers throughout the American Southwest. The result was a cultural transformation that turned the cowboy into one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States. The story of the cowboy, therefore, does not belong exclusively to one nation; it is the product of a shared heritage that began in Spain, evolved in Mexico, and achieved worldwide fame in the United States. It is a fascinating reminder that cultures travel, adapt, and leave lasting influences in places where many people least expect them.
