Fifty States, Fifty Stories: Indigenous America at 250 As the United States approaches 250 years of independence, we invite you to join us on a journey across America—one state at a time. In this new series from Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes, we will explore the documented history of Indigenous peoples throughout all fifty states, examining how expansion, public policy, conflict, displacement, resilience, and survival shaped the nation we know today. Some of these stories will be inspiring. Others will be heartbreaking. And some may challenge long-held assumptions about the American experience. This series is not intended to condemn, divide, or assign guilt to people living today. Nor is it an attempt to rewrite history to fit a particular political viewpoint. Our commitment is to approach these conversations with honesty, respect, and an unwavering dedication to what historians, scholars, official records, and documented evidence reveal. For the Puerto Rican community, this journey carries an additional purpose. For generations, many of us have engaged in passionate discussions about different chapters of Puerto Rico's history. Yet meaningful conversations require context. By broadening our understanding of the larger American experience—its achievements, its contradictions, and its treatment of diverse communities throughout history—we may find ourselves asking deeper questions and seeking a more complete understanding of Puerto Rico's own place within that story. Our goal is not to tell you what to believe. Our goal is to encourage you to think critically, ask questions, explore the evidence, and engage in thoughtful dialogue—even when the truths we encounter are uncomfortable. Because history should not be feared. History should not be ignored. History should be explored with courage, humility, and a commitment to understanding.
