Transfer Addiction After Bariatric Surgery

In this episode we talk about transfer addictions we have experienced since having bariatric surgery. Since food is no longer a source of comfort, reward or escape. Other behaviors or substances now substitute for eating, and become unhealthy. Some examples of transfer addiction are gambling, shopping, as well as addictions to alcohol. Transfer addition can lead to bigger issues in the long run if not taken seriously and if you don't seek help. It's important to recognize these things and talk with your team to find ways to over come them. Things that have helped us are we talk about them...now they are not a secret and we can address them. Finding other things to take their place that are healthy and supports our goals and the life we want to live. We again talk about them, but to realize that while shopping may not sound like a bad transfer addiction; it can lead to financial hardship if not dealt with. We find prayer works - when we pray and give it to God we feel lighter and we can find strength in knowing he will help us get through this, just as he had helped is get through many other difficult situations. If you feel like you are struggling with transfer addiction, we recommend confiding in someone. That can be a friend, your medical team or even us...it is better to get it out in the open so you can begin to work through it. There are many resources available online and locally - below are some sites and groups we have found that offer great information and help.
