By Chyrisse Tabone, Rock At Night Tampa INTERVIEW WITH Ms. JOSIE COTTON Josie Cotton-Everything is Oh Yeah Some of you may remember 80s icon Josie Cotton (“Johnny Are You Queer?”, “Jimmy Loves Maryanne”, and “He Could Be the One?). What you may not know is she has been releasing albums since then—and one very special album Everything Is Oh Yeah will be released on October 4th via Kitten Robot/Cleopatra Records. The back-story is the album was created 30 years ago and was never released—and later lost! The tapes were miraculously discovered and the recordings were in near perfect condition. Imagine, this is like a time capsule discovered in 2019! Back to the future! With such an interest in the 80s in recent years (think Stranger Things, The Goldbergs, The Americans, and of course, Freaks and Geeks), the timing seemed perfect for the album’s release. Rock At Night has heard the album Everything Is Oh Yeah and absolutely loves it! The songs are timeless, capturing the essence of New Wave, 60s girls band, Motown, and rockabilly. There is even a fantastic cover of The Beatles’ “The Night Before”, recorded with the one-and-only Brian Setzer! Really, cool stuff! Rock At Night’s Podcast Channel—Listen to the iTunes Interview Here or Podbay Here Prior to release of the Everything Is Oh Yeah, Cotton released a recently penned single “Ukrainian Cowboy”, which is a mixture of nostalgia, rockabilly, and a bit of Russian influences. Check out the video below: Rock At Night caught up with Josie Cotton for an interview, which can be heard in its entirety via audio—or read excerpts [edited for clarity] of the interview below: “Ukrainian Cowboy” and the new album release Rock At Night asked, “Was the single “Ukrainian Cowboy” recently written or was that from the archives?” Cotton replied, “No, no, I wrote that this year.” Rock At Night wondered, “When you wrote that this year, was it in mind with the new album being released?’ “Everything seems to be happening simultaneously right now. I couldn’t control the series of events. We were en route and I didn’t want to stop anything midstream. There was a single that came out in Spain. I was really excited about the single “Ukrainian Cowboy” and “Cold War Spy.” It was important for me to get that out right now, something new, before dredging up stuff from the past. I was trying to beat the release of that record Everything is Oh Yeah.” In reference to her soon-to-be-released album, Rock At Night inquired, “Are you going to have any videos from Everything is Oh Yeah?” “There is a lyric video for the title song.” Cotton continued, “We’re going to make a real video later on. It’s really funny with toy stick figures. It’s kind of Japanese…everything Japanese is alright with me! We’re trying to figure how to do a video for this record because it was recorded 30 years ago and we can’t really do a performance of it because there’s no original players. We are trying to come up with a clever way for it to make sense.” Rock At Night asked, “You are having a release party on Oct 5th. It says in the press release that you are going to be performing the songs. Do you even remember the songs?” “Well, when Paul, my partner in the recording studio, found these two-inch 24 tracks (they were unmarked). We had no idea what they were. Then I realized it was from a record I really thought was lost. We had to re-mix everything and [I] became intimate with every nuance of my vocals and instruments. I relearned the songs as we were mixing them.” “The whole thing is so intriguing to me that 30 years later an album is being released—It’s almost like a time capsule,” laughed Rock At Night. “It is! I almost called it Lost In Space. I really thought it was gone in one of the natural disasters in California or lost in one of the studios or garages. “One thing that was amazing was the tapes were intact and in perfect condition. We baked the tapes for two days at a very low temperature. You

Click on the arrow above to listen to the entire interview By Chyrisse Tabone, Rock At Night Tampa Rock At Night has always had a penchant for classic rock bands—and Millennial bands that have that dirty, sexy, rock sound. You’ll find us following bands large and small between the UK, EU, and US such as Blackberry Smoke, Magpie Salute, Greta Van Fleet, rumHoney, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, and many more that have the “it” sound. Now, our new favorite band is Dirty Honey, a Los Angeles band which released a must-hear self-titled EP which will give you faith that classic-sounding rock music is here to stay! Dirty Honey came to fruition a couple of years ago but has managed to tour with Slash, open for The Who and Guns N Roses, not to mention playing at a slew of summer festivals such as Welcome to Rockville, Rocklahoma, and Sonic Temple. Rock At Night’s Podcast Channel—Listen Here A two year whirlwind Dirty Honey EP Rock At Night interviewed John Notto, guitarist with Dirty Honey, asking to recap the band’s last couple whirlwind years. He said, “We did seven shows with Slash this year and three last year, and those three were really our first shows, in terms of real shows. When we got management, that was the first thing that was kind of booked us.” I responded, “You mean you guys formed two years ago and, bam! You’re touring with Slash?” Notto explained, “The singer and I have known each other the longest, pretty much six years, the whole time we’ve been in L.A.. or longer. Then I met the bass player, Justin. The singer, Marc, I’ve known for a long time. I played in his bar band. He had some originals but for the most part they were bar band gigs. For a long time it was my way of keeping rock ‘n’ roll in my life in this L.A. landscape. I brought in Justin because the bass player was going to leave. Justin and I met through our circle of musicians in L.A. and he is just “rock ‘n’ roll” in my opinion. “So we started plodding along, trying to make it an original project and getting away from the cover band thing. It was really hard for us to find a drum chair so Justin brought in Cory for one of our cover band gigs and he said, ‘Yo! I really want to do this! I want to be in the band!’ And he was kind of the first person that was awesome and also said that! There’s no shortage of people wanting to be in a band but admittedly we wanted somebody really good! “So the two year mark was when Cory joined us on drums. That’s when we named it “Dirty Honey” and that’s when we started to become serious. That’s when the songs were written.” Management is key L-R: bassist Justin Smolian, vocalist Marc LaBelle, drummer Corey Coverstone Notto discussed how the band became serious, started song writing, and acquired management from a long-time friends he describes as “like having our uncle manage us…we’ve known him so long it kind of felt like family.” He said, “After we made a music video, we got the attention of our current manager, who had been a longtime friend. We had known about our manager for many years. He had seen us play in our cover band gigs and never took us seriously because we weren’t doing anything serious. When he heard ‘When I’m Gone’, our current single, he was like, ‘No questions asked! I can put this on the radio!’ “He said, ‘Hey! I got some gigs for you guys! You guys want to open for Slash?’ “We were all like, Ahh…yeah!’ “Good! Because I already said ‘yes’!” So I asked about the name of the mysterious manager, and Notto laughed, saying, “Sorry! His name is Mark DiDia. He has a history of running record labels. He was with Columbia and Capitol—I think President of A & R? Then I think about 10 years ago when everything wasn’t as lucrative, especially for A&R People, he switched over to managing. He also manages the Counting Crows, Three Doors Down. I guess back in the 80s, he was doing promotions for Geffen Records. And so that was awesome for us! Now, he doesn’t really boast about that s

CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN TO THE AUDIO By Andrea Ramirez-Maciolek, Rock At Night Philadelphia Mostly known for its breathtaking geography and the birthplace of Johnny Cash, The Natural State of Arkansas is also home to industrial, “shock-n-roll” band WHITE COLLAR SIDESHOW. Let’s be honest here and say that I was completely skeptical. I had fallen victim to the pitfalls of geographical stereotype when it comes to music and I should have known better based on my own personal experiences. I am grateful to have been proven wrong by the dynamic sound of husband and wife duo that solely make up WHITE COLLAR SIDESHOW. Drummer and singer TD along with wife VERONICA on the bass are a force to be reckoned with even if there are only two of them creating the same thunderous sound of a 5 piece rock band. Original in their own right, WHITE COLLAR SIDESHOW can be compared to White Zombie with a millennial edge. Transitioning and gathering inspiration through the rock generation of the 80’s, 90’s, and the millennium, their love of zombies, and film have allowed WHITE COLLAR SIDESHOW to produce their own unique brand of music and visuals. I recently had the honor of chatting with drummer TD about a lot of great things ahead for them. The band, which was mostly DIY, has recently signed with CURTAIN CALL RECORDS. Their latest album, I DIDN’T COME HERE TO DIE, will be released in October backed by a long list of tour dates. Veronica, White Collar Sideshow As music fans we often forget that our favorite bands are not objects programmed to create music just for our listening pleasure . In the interview, TD brings the real music experience back down to a human level detailing the trials, hard work, and rewards of the life of a band on the road. You begin to gain a greater respect for the life of a musician as you listen to the interview. An impressive story teller with southern hospitality at its best, TD outlines the adventures of a dedicated husband and wife team living on the road to bring music to their family of listeners in the US and abroad.
