episode The Benefits of Studying Abroad cover

Description

In May 2026, I had a chat with Jonathan, a Senior Institutional Relations Officer at a study abroad company. He also happens to be one of my closest friends and the person who inspired my first overseas move. Jonathan has two decades of experience in the field of international education, from his own study abroad experience in Melbourne, Australia, to his work setting up international programs and supporting other students in their study abroad ventures.  In this episode, Jonathan gives an overview of the kinds of study abroad programs currently available for students, shares factors to consider when choosing a destination country, and reflects on the challenges and benefits of his own study abroad experience.  An audio note: at times, you’ll hear the dulcet sounds of New York City in the background, given Jonathan’s Manhattan recording location. SLPs Overseas is an independently produced podcast. I record, edit and publish episodes while working full-time as an SLP (and travelling, of course!) Special Announcement: Overseas Opportunity (Vietnam)

In the next SLPs Overseas episode, you’ll hear from three of the Directors of the Trinh Foundation Australia, a voluntary, non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to helping the people of Vietnam establish speech therapy as a profession in their country.  Trinh Foundation Australia is currently recruiting in-country clinical placement volunteers and online Beyond Borders mentors. You will hear more about these roles in the upcoming episode. In the meantime, you can find out more information about the roles and express your interest by visiting the Trinh Foundation Australia website: here [https://trinhfoundation.org/get-involved/opportunities]. You can also have a look at their Instagram account [https://www.instagram.com/trinh_foundation/].

An American Studying SLP in Australia (REPLAY)

Back in June 2023, I caught up with Beth, an American SLP who studied her Master’s program in Australia. Back then, the podcast was called The SLP Cohort Catch Up because I was reconnecting with people from my Master’s, 10 years post-graduation. While a lot has changed in Beth’s life and my life since we originally recorded this interview, I wanted to replay it for you now as an SLPs Overseas episode because there is still so much that you can take away from hearing Beth’s story, particularly if you are an SLP-to-be, thinking about studying speech-language pathology overseas. SLPs Overseas is an independently produced podcast. I record, edit and publish episodes while working full-time as an SLP (and travelling, of course!) episode A British SLP in New Zealand (Nelson) artwork

A British SLP in New Zealand (Nelson)

In May 2026, I had a chat with Grace, a British SLP living and working in Nelson, New Zealand. Nelson is at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. You might know that the Marlborough wine region is on the South Island. But did you also know that Nelson is home to the “Centre of New Zealand” monument? Well, technically, the geographic centre of New Zealand is about 60 kilometres southwest of Nelson. The monument in Nelson that you can visit today was the starting point for the first land surveys of New Zealand in the 1870s.  Grab your passport, pack your bags and get ready to come on an audio adventure to learn what life is like as a British SLP in New Zealand 🇳🇿. You can find Grace on Instagram at thecuriousspeechie [https://www.instagram.com/thecuriousspeechie/]. SLPs Overseas is an independently produced podcast.
