A DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE: Happy birthday, Lutherans throughout the world. On this date, June 25, in 1530, Christian Beyer read the German text of the Augsburg Confession before Emperor Charles V and the assembled religious and political leaders of the realm. This confession clearly states the basic beliefs of all Lutherans, based upon God's Word as the sole authority. Beginning with the doctrine of God, the Confession deals with Sin, the Son of God, Justification, the Preaching Office, and all the major teachings of Lutheranism, centering on God's grace in Christ. We celebrate that event as the official beginning of the Lutheran Church.

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Stephen Langton died on this date in 1228. Who is he? He was a preacher, scholar and theologian at the University of Paris and later the Archbishop of Canterbury. While serving in Paris he developed the system of chapter divisions, something that others had done in the past in local settings, yet Langton's system caught on and is what we still use today. Evidence of this is in Martin Luther's Catechisms, where he refers to chapters, but not verses. We can thank God for Langton and his legacy as we read our Bibles and share the Good News.
